Has any one had feed issues withthe Ruger SR1911 full size ?

I have feed issues. Bullet (ball 230 gr.) Will jame 3 to 4 on the nose of the bullet 3 or 4 times out of a 7 rd magazine.

Bought new wolf 16 lb springs and wilson combat 7 rd magazines. It has helped but still happening way to often.

I hope i dont have to send it back to Ruger.

This has happened no matter what ammunition i use.. factory or my reloads.

Had a RI that never jamed and ate everything fed to it.

Guess i should go bsck to an RI

I had a few problems at first with a couple Mec-Gar magazines in my SR1911, which prompted me to buy a couple Wilson Combat 47Ds and a Metalform. A little surprisingly, at least for me, the Metalform performed the best out of the box.

However, after a few hundred rounds (sorry, didn't keep a round count, but less than 500), I've found that all of my magazines now function just fine.

One thing that may or not help, is to eject the mag after charging the chamber with the first round, and using your thumb make sure that the first round in the mag is seated to the rear of the mag. Re-insert mag and begin firing.

I can't say scientifically that this procedure made a difference, but it sure seemed to.

I have 3 variations of the SR1911 and have never had any problems with any of them shooting a variety of different types of ammo. I'd call Ruger and they'll take it back and correct the problem. They'll send you a prepaid mailer too.

I should've also wrote that the reason I started using the above procedure is that during one range session, I dropped the mag for some reason and noticed that the top round was already 'cocked' at a downward angle after charging the chamber. Some of the subsequent magazines had the same 'down-angled' issue, but re-positioning the bullet seemed to make a difference in how the magazine/gun performed. And as I said, now the problem has completely gone away. I put it down to a breaking in period between the gun and the mags, though I suppose it could've just been the mags.

It may need a little touch up on the feed ramp, sounds like it needs a trip back if its still happening with 3 different mags. How many rounds do you have through it and have you given it a good cleaning?

I had problems with my Ruger, it would only feed ball ammo and nothing else. I tried new springs and different mags. Ended up sending it back. Ruger fixed a number of items with great results. Contact Ruger CS and see what they have to say.

I have a Ruger SR1911 full size and I have not had the issues that you have had. Mine has been almost flawless. I've shot it for the last two years as my main match Wild Bunch pistol shooting most nearly all 230 grain Lead Round Nose hand loads. I know for a fact that I have shot 4000 rounds of those through it.

I'd call Ruger first thing tomorrow morning and tell them what's going on and let them fix it.

I have found that very light stoning of the feed ramp will achieve great results on a new barrel. Just enough that it's butter smooth.

Hello 454 ( big block chevy?) I own a SR1911 Talo, which simply has a lower rail. Mine came with 2 mags. A 7 round and an 8 round. I am not sure why, but it did.
With the 7 round, it runs flawlessly. I also use some Kimber mags, as I have a few of them too and it runs great with them as well. The Kimber mags are the original 7 round type.

My 8 round gives me trouble. I need to "smack it in" hard, and then using my weak hand, hold it up while shooting, to get it to run.
I am not sure why I haven't thrown it out yet, maybe to use as parts someday. If I don't treat the 8 rounder this way, I get jams that lock the slide open.

If I only use the 7 rounders, this gun is as reliable as it gets.

My SR used to double a lot, but I backed out the trigger screw a 1/8 turn and it no longer does that. Very reliable gun.

I will say, the factory recoil spring feels way heavier than the 16lbs that is spec'ed. You can easily feel the difference when racking the slide between the Ruger and any other 1911 I have. I do not believe the heavier spring has caused any trouble at all. One day. I will swap that for a Wolff 16lb.

Good luck

Well my reloads i have found that instead of 1.250 that is my usuall OAL for 45acp... i had to.set the bullet deeper to 1.230. Ruans better but still get the occasional jam from ftf .. bullet still catching on the nose

Hi, Old 454:

Here's my experience with my SR1911:

For the first 1K rounds or so, I was getting about a 1% failure to return to battery (FRB). I shoot only brass, and only handloads. At the 1K round mark, I did a few things to address this issue:

1. Installed a new Ruger recoil spring (18.5 lbs purchased for $2 from shopRuger.com),

2. I took a Q-tip with a little Semi-Chrome metal polish, and gently rubbed the feeding ramp with the Q-tip. Not much, just a few circular motions with the Q-tip in the fingers to make sure the ramp was completely smooth,

3. Used a firmer grip when shooting the pistol,

4. Used a bit more lube on the frame and slide,

5. Disassembled the factory mags that came with the pistol, cleaned the springs and interiors real well leaving a very light oily coat on the inside to assist the follower movement,

6. I only shoot handloads. I also started running each and every one of my brass cases though a push-through die and check them in a case gage for consistency and reliability. I also use a COL of 1.230", and I apply a case mouth diameter (crimp) of 0.468",

7. Also, after loading a magazine, I tap the back of it on the palm of my hand to assure all the rounds are properly lined up and even in the magazine.

Now, I'm not sure what individual factor accounted for it, or if more than one or all of them combined accounted for it, but my FRB issue is completely gone. The pistol runs flawlessly (not bragging, just reporting). I've got utmost confidence in the reliability of the pistol. I'm now at about the 4.5K round mark.

I do, however, as a matter of routine maintenance (for myself, at least), change the recoil spring when the round count approaches 2K on the spring. At that point, the old springs are a full 3 coils shorter than the new springs.

Just passing along the benefit of my personal experience with my SR1911. Hope it helps you somewhat....

Bayou,
I do all he exact same thing.. tapping mags to set the rds in the magazine etc... will try to clean the factory mags as u suggest.

I did polish the feed ramp with 2000 grit emery cloth ... just a tad bit nothing radical.
Toyr eounds are exactly what mine are also..

I have a relatively low round count through my SR1911 with maybe 500 rounds, but there's not been a single issue with ball ammo and hollow points.

Call Ruger, they'll take care of you.
