Ruger SR1911 or?

The first and only 1911 I have ever owned was a Colt 80 series (20 years ago) and at the time I was a young inexperienced shooter who was only familiar with revolvers and wasn't particularly fond of the Colt. I am a modest reloader and load for 357 mag and 9mm but wanted to get into 45acp. I have very little knowledge of the 1911 and could use some advise on what would be good choice for a 1911 around the $700 range with a nice trigger.
 
I have a SR 1911 it is a fine weapon. It is well worth the money. That being said I really like Rock Island 1911's. Quality weapons and a little less money. I had one and sold it, and sorry I did. Both these guns can be compared to the model 70 series, no firing pin block.
 
I'm very satisfied with my SR1911 (CMD LWT) that is my carry gun, but there are some other good choices in the same price range. For a range gun I will probably buy the Springfield Armory range officer in the 5" .45 ACP format as my next 1911.
 
I have 2 1911s. A Kimber and a Ruger SR1911. For many reasons, I prefer the Ruger. It is a 70 series, novak sights, all stainless ( even the black ones are stainless from what I can figure) the barrel and bushing are stainless. It is well made. You can look at the Kimber and see where they cut corners to save money. I would not hesitate to buy another Ruger.

I have never owned a Kimber...so it would be helpful if you would be more specific as to what you have seen that indicates they have cut corners to save money.
 
I own more than a few 1911s........Colts, Rugers, DWs, Kimbers. The Ruger SR1911 is probably the best buy out of all of them. For its price it gives you a well made, solid, good performing 1911. The others made be a bit nicer, better finished, etc. but also carry higher prices. The Ruger is a great value for anyone wanting a $700 price point.
 
My SR1911 was the least accurate 1911 I have ever owned, it functioned flawlessly and accuracy probably would have been ok for most SD situations. It would do 4" @ 25 yards.
I ended up selling it off and now a Colt Combat Elite has it's dutys still 100% reliable and 2-2.5" @25 yards.
For the money I've seen a few Springfield Range Officers that would shoot very well.
 
The Ruger or Springfield at $700 , the Colt is going to be near $800 .

Probably in your price , I would get the range officer .

I have a 70 series Colt and had two SR1911's that I sold or traded . I liked the SR1911 and would buy one again , but I don't have a problem letting one go either .
 
My FiL got one from a Filipino outfit called Metro Arms recently. I think it is their fancy model. The grips and sights are very nice. It is extremely accurate. He is extremely pleased. Through some sort of bizarre situation he won it off Gunbroker for a bid of around $330. I think they are usually closer to $600. Our friend at the LGS was amazing when he saw the selling price.
 
I have a Colt LW 45ACP 1911 Commander and a Ruger 9mm LW Commander 1911. They are both excellent guns, although I had to tune the extractor on the Colt to get it to shoot HPs reliably. Not hard to do just didn't expect to have to do it on a nib Colt 1911. The Ruger has been 100% reliable right out of the box and cost less than the Colt. The RIA guns are a great buy if you want and EDC/range gun. A lot of gun for the money. I gave mine to my son-in-law when he retired from the Army after 21.5 years of service and he loves it.

The Ruger is a nice 1911. I wanted one when they first came out, but they were impossible to find. While doing research on some other 1911's, I found the Magnum Research Desert Eagle 1911G. I've owned one for about 6 years, and it is every bit the equal of the Kimbers, Colts, S&W's and Springfields in my safe. It has THE best out of the box trigger on a 1911 that I have ever felt. Firing mechanism is Series 70, without any firing pin blocks or extra doodads. The gun is made in Israel by BUL. They're selling online for around $675 and are worth every penny.
