Ruger SR-45 Pistol

A while back I started a thread about 1911 autos because I was thinking of getting one. I never made the jump. But yesterday I was in Academy Sports and in the display case they had a Ruger SR 45 and I made the mistake of asking to see it. I was impress at the light weight and how good it felt in my hand.

I have been a Ruger fan from way back. I have never had a lemon from them. Anyway I am thing about buying this gun but would like to hear any feedback you folks have on it.

I am pretty serious about this gun. I have offered a buddy my 243 that I don't shoot and it would be enough to buy the gun. A gun I shoot is better than one I don;t shoot at all. So what do ya'll say?

I have the SR45 and here are my observations.

1. It is a big sucker. It fits fine in my hand, real good in fact, but this is not a small pistola.

2. It shoots with shockingly good accuracy. I took it and one of my Gold Cups to the range. The Gold Cup, as always, shot fantastic. But my $495 SR45 matched it in terms of accuracy. Jesus, how can that be?

3. Real nice trigger.

4. Very easy to strip and clean like all of the SRs.

5. Has a slide safety. This is very important to me; some people may disagree. I insist that any semi-auto I own has a manual safety.

They had a small magazine issue I believe when they first came out but I am sure that has been worked out by now and ruger has one of the best customer services in the business. I say go for it. I avail hate magazine disconnect safeties bug it can be removed/turned off in the ruger j believe.

I've shot a couple of SR9's and one SR45, I like them pretty well, not enough to get one of my own, but they fit the hand nicely have decent sights and triggers. If I were looking for a fullsize non 1911 .45, the SR45 would probably be my choice.

Also, I believe the SR series to have some of the lowest recoil in the business. I have shot a sr40 and sr40c and they didn't feel like I was shooting a .40. Had much lower recoil than my Walther PPQ .40, as well as my old M&P40 and a glock 23 gen 3 I have shot

What does the sr45 do that the Ruger American doesn't do....other than have a manual safety and mag disconnect?

I could be totally wrong, but I'm assuming the Ruger American is gonna replace the sr line in the Ruger lineup.

I haven't yet handled a ruger American pistol but I have watched a few videos about them. I believe the ruger SR45 to have a much different, probably slimmer grip than the American pistols, the American pistol comes with 3 total backstraps but the SR comes with a reversible backstrap. I also believe the American pistol to be wider at the slide and also grip, and have less of a beavertail. These are only things I noticed visually and mayxnlt be true.

I had a Ruger SR45 for a year or so. It proved to be a bit too heavy for me to carry comfortably and didn't like the el cheapo perfecta ammo I could afford, and had a few fte which I couldn't tolerate in a pistol I planned to carry and rely on. There also weren't many accessories available for it either. However, there were a lot of positives though. It had a sweet trigger and fit nicely in the hand. At the price point (385 used) it probably can't be beat in my area where used glocks are still over $500. The magazine disconnect was a 10 minute removal job.

I'd recommend one as long as you understand what you're getting: a reliable pistol at a good price point. It may not have all the features of a more expensive gun, but for what it is it does the job well.
