Ruger SP101 Spurless

I need your opinion on the Ruger SP101 hammerless (spurless), in terms of quality; lets say v.s. an S&W similar gun. I have a S&W M60 and would like to have one without the hammer or spur... I like the way the Ruger looks, but have never owned a Ruger. What is your take on this new Ruger? Thanks.

The SP101 is a great gun and I would not hesitate to own one. But at this point I own a Smith 340PD (Scandium gun) and like it even more than the Ruger. Now, it is a one purpose gun ( for CC ) its only 13oz. (empty) and it holds 5 rounds. When I carry it in my paddle holster I don't even notice its there. I have shot both .38 and .357 Mag in it but I only practice with the .38 because the recoil is strong in the .357. Its built for one purpose, but it is perfect for what it was designed for (CC). Make sure you hand several guns in spurless and if possible, shot several. But to be honest you can't go wrong, no matter which one you get.

I have the 3” version of the SP. Since it’s my primary carry gun, and I shoot it exclusively DA, I had the hammer bobbed. I find it’s less likely to snag on my clothing when I draw it. The SP has been very dependable for me. I find that with a little heavier gun like the SP, perceived recoil is reduced so I can practice with .357’s for longer periods of time. I also have an S&W 642, which is hammerless. It’s very nice too, but I prefer the SP.

I have the 2.5" bobbed hammer SP101---added a Hogue rubber grip for $15----VERY nice.

Don't worry about the warranty----if you even have any problems----Ruger will take care of you----probably even better than so of the so-called warranty gun makers.

Thanks, Omaha - That sounds good to me... because of money constrains at present, I might offer my M60 on a trade for an SP101 2¼"... on the classifieds section.

I have a mod 60 (357) and a Sp 101. Neither is spurless (yet!). IMHO, the SP 101 is built every bit as good as the mod 60. The only /slight down side is that it ( 101) weighs more, is slightly larger and is a touch harder to find grips/holsters for. On the upside, the 101 seems to tame recoil better. Also FWIW, I like the spurless feature but am still not thrilled with loosing the ability for the occasional well aimed single action shot. ( Correct me if I'm wrong but Ruger, like Taurus made the concealed hammer modle DA only?) Another alternitive is to have the hammer on your mod 60 bobbed. If done right, this will give you the best of both worlds.

p.s. You might also consider a S&W 640

Thanks, Tacoma - I do like the SP101 profile much better than the M640; cutting the spur on the M60 just doesn't look right :barf:

oldfella, Rugers are in fact guaranteed for life, no matter how many owners they have been through! Ruger does not include a warranty registration card because they don't warranty the gun "to the original owner only". They warranty their guns forever, to anyone; they don't care if you bought it new or used. Near as I can see; Ruger has the single best warranty in the world.

...one more question - can the SP101 be shot single action, by carefully catching and holding the spurless hammer before it drops... does it hold in single action position to shoot SA?

Ruger

No the spurless SP does not have a full cock notch. You can only shoot it double action. I have the spur model for that reason. The older 6 shot speed six was the opposite. It would go to full cock even in the spurless version. You will find the Ruger action a bit rough. DOn't worry! After dry firing or shooting 100-200 times it will smooth up 110%. Mine are like butter after years of use. Never broke a Ruger either, they are tough!

This was probably already answered, but.....

I was just on gunbroker, and I noticed a 3" sp101 that had the hammer spur, and was going for a pretty honest price, I dunno if you guys like to use gunbroker or not, but it seems just what your lookin for.
