Ruger SP101 or S&W 640 or Taurus 650

I have been searching for a conealable revolver via IWB holster for a while now. I have narrowed it down to 3 choices ultimately. What do you guys think?

Here are my thoughts. All are a very nice carry revolver. All have concealable hammers (except the SP101 which is spurless and good enough in my opinion). I realize that there are some big price differences here and that you get what you pay for. However, is the Ruger SP101 $120.00 better than the Taurus 650, and likewise the S&W 640 $120 better than the Ruger SP101? In other words, are the minimal differences in these guns worth the difference in price?

I have a blued Ruger GP100 6" right now and am very happy with it. I thought I'd at least register on here and ask the experts before I go out and make my purchase.

Any suggestions, criticism, opinions, and/or advice would be appreciated!!!

Welcome!!!

Nope, Ruger revolvers are much better than Smith revolvers. I'm talking about price, quality, and construction! Smiths have slighty better finish and triggers and thats it.

If asking about current production, my order of preference would be:

Ruger

Taurus

Smith & Wesson

If talking about older (pre-agreement) models then S&W moves from 3rd to 1st place. I simply detest the aesthetics :barf: and mechanical modifications the current owners of the S&W marque think so highly of.

the sp101 is heavier than the previous two, but that can be a good thing when using full house .357 loads. It is definately the sturdiest of the three. I was sold on it when I compared it side by side with the 650. it felt more solid, has a better lockup system for the cylinder, and had a better feel overall. I think it is better suited for daily carry and wear and tear that it will recieve being packed around all day. That being said, if you are going for a backup arm, one of the others may suit you better due to lighter weight, but if it is going to be a main carry piece, the sp101 all the way.....hands down.

I also recommend the Ruger SP101. It is perhaps one of the finest .357 revolvers you can get these days, second only to the Colt Python in my opinion.

I had the same situation a couple years ago. Got the Taurus first. I just couldn't justify $200+ more for the Smith, all of which I tried had crappy trigger pulls. The 650's was long but smooth. Then I got the the SP because the were cool and I had to have one. Since I got the SP, the 650 has sat in the safe.

I have some experience with the 640 and SP101. I think for me, it would come down to what you plan to shoot. If sticking with .38 +Ps mostly, I think the 640 is heavy enough to tame recoil, even with uncomfortable grips. If you're thinking of shooting mostly .357s, even light ones, I'd go with the SP101. I personally prefer the 640. There are 640s out there without the lock.
