Ruger SP101 in .22 Caliber

I have a Ruger SP101 in .38 - 3 inch barrel and really like it.

I am thinking about getting a .22 to plink with, and for various reasons I am going the revolver route.

Anybody have the SP101 in .22? And if you do how do you like it? Model KSP-241X with a 4 inch barrel.

Other models I am considering are the Ruger Single-Six and that cute little Ruger Bearcat in stainless. But primarily the SP101 because I love the grip and I shoot the .38 well. Opinions about the Single Six and the Bearcat are welcome as well as the SP101.

Yes, I like Ruger revolvers. They just seem to be made better than others. One of these days I am going to get a GP100 with a six inch barrel in .357 and have some fun! Why stop there, how about a Super Redhawk in .44 Mag. Uh oh - just ran out of money about three guns ago.

My brother in law has one with the lighter weight barrel. He thinks VERY highly of it. Accurate, totally reliable. He carries it constantly on his farm.

If you think you might need a bit more ooomph in your .22, pick the Single-Six. It comes with the interchangeable .22Mag cylinder, as well as the .22LR cylinder. If you are looking for a small single-action 'fun gun', in .22LR only, the Bearcat is a great choice.

As much as I like the SP-101 series, IMHO, that format is ....well, overkill for a .22. I don't own, but have fired the 3" SP-101 in .357Mag. The SP-101 in .22LR is actually heavier than my KP-90 Ruger [.45ACP] when both are empty. With that weight [Ruger catalog says 34 OZ for the .22 SP-101], i suspect that recoil is somewhere between a gnat-kick and "less than zero".....

:D
Good luck and good shooting

Get the SP

Since you have the SP101 in .38, a rimfire copy of the SP would allow tremendous carry over for cheap practice. No need to get used to a different grip frame and even the snubby SP rimfires are more accurate than they have a right to be. Although the Single Six is a great gun, in the stainless edition, its weight will equal or exceed that of the SP (especially true if you can find a used SP with the half shroud barrel). I have 3 SP-101 rimfires and might buy a couple more. A close friend of mine uses his as a constant range companion, shooting any variety of guns but still finding time to do some DA draw and shoot practice. To date, he has logged over 9,000 plus rounds and it just keeps a tickin'. If you love your .38 as you described, the rimfire variant will serve you well.

Sincerely,

I use to have the 4" barrel SP 101 .22.

I had problems with cartridges sticking in the cylinder after only 2 wheels through of ammo. They would get stuck so hard, that it took a small screwdriver to pry them out.

Overall it was a nice gun, but the extremely poor ammo extraction led me to sell it.

I LOVE my 4" SP101 .22. My only complaint is that for a plinking/small game gun, the front sight is wayyyyy to thick for that type of gun IMHO...and I can't find a thinner aftermarket one.

Where's my grinder
