Ruger SP101 grips for pocket carry?

pwd

New member
Yesterday I bought an SP101. When wearing slacks, I plan to carry it in the front pocket in an Uncle Mike's #3 holster. Problem is the big rubber grips. Rubber does not slide smoothly out of a pocket, and I think they could be considerably smaller.

Does anyone make a cut down grip for the SP101 with concealment a priority? I can live with a short grip where my pinky hangs off the bottom of the frame.

I also ordered a set of Wolff springs from Brownells. Do I need a gunsmith to install those, or can a layman follow the directions easily enough? Thaks for any help!

Grips and such

I think Hogue makes a Bantam grip now, too. I use their regular wood ones on my SP101 and it fits in my pocket. Herrett's offer a Detective grip and Badger makes a grip for them.. Might also check Ahrends and Craig Spegal as they make abbreviated wood grips. I don't know if Ahrends makes Ruger grips; others say Craig Spegal (Bay City, OR) makes grips for Rugers.

If you have a minimum of tools the SP can be disassembled to put the springs in. The mainspring is the bear but can be done with a little thought. If you put a new mainspring in I would go with at least the 10 pound one to avoid misfires.

Here are some websites:

Hogue:

Herrett's:

I think you will really like your SP.

I use Uncle Mike's boot grips and carry in front pocket of jeans, works great, very reasonable price.
There are two styles that are similar, you want the short one.

I use to carry the SP101 as a backup in an ankle holster. You're right those grips are comfortable but very tacky, they would hangup on my pants. I just electric taped the grip for a temporary fix(years), it worked great. That's the "cheap cop fix":D It might be good while you're waiting to get the new grips shipped.
