Ruger SP 101 in .22 - any thoughts?

Just put one on lay-a-way for $289.00. Condition is LNIB (no "B"), 3 inch barrel. Any thoughts on ammo, zeroing, performance? Will be used as a trainer, but may have some other utility...

Have been eyeing one in the local shop. Wish I knew someone who had one that I could try. I have a weakness for .22s. I have a S&W 650 (J-frame) in .22 Mag with an extra .22RF cylinder. 3 inch heavy barrel - just wish it had adj. sights.

rugged gun. i have a SP101 4" full lug and it is a nice gun. the grip is comfortable and sights r adequate. accuracy is pretty good, but not as good as my S&W 617 10shot. but as a plinker it is pretty good...fun shooter.

my only complaint is the trigger pull in DA. it rather...sucks. i put in a lighter hammer spring and it helped, but the trigger is still not to my liking. the SA trigger pull is ok, but my SP101 will be visiting a 'smith when i have the time and $$$.

considering you also wrote "may have some other utility" for the money (and weight difference) why not a .22mag? i have a taurus 941 8 shot revolver in .22mag. yes the price of ammo is up there with conventional center fire ammo, but for "other utilities" a .22mag roung has more muzzle velocity and "effect" than a .22lr. i do own a few .22lr's and they do make nice trainer's but the versitility of the .22mag may be more to you overall needs.

While it is not as smooth as the Diamondback (there he goes a'gin ranting about his Diamondback) or a S&W (OK, the now Non PC gun for the RKBA folks to buy), the SP 101 is a tough little 22. It needs one major improvement (the trigger I can do myself): better grips. That said, I like it and it's a favorite.

Thanks folks. I *really* liked the S&W airweight .22 with adj. sights - but I do not buy that brand anymore. Luckily the clerk offered it as an alternative and I was able to pontificate as to their traitor status in front of a crowd. :D

The rear sight looked like you could adjust it for windage. True? Guess elevation adjustments will be via a file......

As to getting a .22 Mag, my primary goal is to use the Ruger as a trainer for my classes. Ammo is cheaper.

BTW, my favorite small game handgun is a .38 with wadcutters. Much more slap than a LR and ammo's about the same price as .22 Mag.
