I recently bought a Ruger SA .22/.22 mag which came with two cylinders. Can I shoot all .22 (long, LR or shorts) out the .22 mag cylinder like a .38 sp/.357 or .44 sp/.44 mag? If I can do this, what is the point of the two cylinders?

No you cannot fire LR out of a magnum cylinder, the case of the .22 magnum is slightly thicker. It will probably technically work, but you'll end up with split casings and might damage the cylinder.

icame across some longs about a month ago.first rimfire ammo i have found in along time.dug out my ruger owners manual for my single six and said could shoot short long and long rifle out of lr cylinder but said only shoot mags out out of mag cylinder.not sure why but i only shoot my lr cylinder as cannot get mags to shoot good from my pistol.lr shoot excellent.GSPMAN

As others have correctly pointed out in addition to being longer, a .22 mag is also just a touch....1 thou I think larger in diameter than .22 S, L, and LR.

Thus .22 will fit in a .22 mag cylinder, but is not the correct caliber. .22 mag will not fit in a .22 cylinder, thank goodness, .22 mag is much higher pressure.

.38 and .357 can interchange in a .357 revolver. They are the same diameter. Problems do crop up if a lot of .38 has been shot in a .357 cylinder. A good cleaning will put it right.

Thank you all for your responses. I learned something new today:D Did not realize that there was a diameter difference until this thread. The expertise and willingness to share in this forum is truly unique. Thanks!

And there just might be a good reason why Ruger includes two different cylinders, huh?

You can shoot shorts, longs, and long rifles out of the LR cylinder as those all share the same case diameter and just differ in length... which is the same reason. 38s will work in a .357 cylinder.
