I am thinking about doing some trading to obtain a Ruger 357 mag. Security six. It has a fair amount of holster wear but appears to be pretty tight. It has a black duty style belt and holster with the ammo slots on the belt. I was wondering , Does Ruger still make these? What would one be worth in the described condition?

ruger security six

greetings, ruger droped the ss series in favor of the sp & gp series, in stainless they go around 200 + or - in blue a little less. have two in st.i got for 175 each. i think there the strongest rev.out there. respt submitted dadsfreehold

I think the Security Six was the finest revolver Ruger made.

The SP and GP series just don't cut it with me. Too bulky.

I would venture a guess that a decent SS would go for something between $200 and $250. They keep going and going and going........

I'll keep my SS, thank you.

i'd be willing to pay $200 in stainless, but would deduct for blue and the amount of wear visible. it is also my favorite DA ruger...the gp is too unweldly and the sp gives up to much for its size reduction

I just picked one up on Saturday. Blued, it is in near perfect condition--light cylinder line is only mark on piece, including grips. Paid $249.00 for it.
Now that's here in the NYC metro area.
Things tend to be a bit more expensive here, if I may be permitted to make an understatement.
Haven't shot it yet. But the thing is solid, yet not overly bulky at all, I would almost call it compact for a magnum revolver.
I did a bit of research on ss's here and on rugerforum, and from what I saw, I'm glad I jumped at this piece--these seem to have a very devoted following. Good luck with whatever you do.

Security Six

As has been stated already, the Security Six is a wonderful revolver. Mine is my favorite handgun. Here is a picture of what a $125.00 specimen looks like. (The buy of the century for me).:)

In this area (Philly) they've started to go up in price, with a really good stainless model going for $300 or so.

Also going up in some other regions, from what I read.

It's still a best bet for a reasonably compact but very durable .357.

I had a Security Six that was awesome.

When I was young and dumb, I traded it on another gun. It was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made in regards to a firearm.

Get one...they are fine weapons. If I see one for sale, I'm gonna snag one up.

"Six" series Ruger DA's

including the Speed Six, Service Six (both fixed sights) and the Security Six were, in my opinion, the best medium-frame DA .357s Ruger ever built. I know the GP's are heavier built, maybe stronger- but what they should have done with the "Sixes" was added the front crane lock ALA Redhawk, and left the rest alone. Great guns- I had several over the years, and the fixed-sight models I had were always "on the button" for regulation. Wish they'd bring 'em all back!

As for price, I see a lot of these selling rather high on the auctions. I've seen police trade-ins from wholesalers going for under $200. I'd be reluctant to to pay too much for one of these, and would check the Ruger DA section of Gun List and the pictorla ads in Shotgun News before deciding if it's priced right.

Make you a nice wheelgun if you can buy it right, though,

By now there must be quite an archive on these. The consensus is generally that they are the best guns Ruger ever made; probably the most durable utility .357 DAs ever made, and that dropping them from the line was one of the biggest mistakes Ruger ever made.

I used one for years as an LEO and instructor, and still carry one daily now that I'm retired. The honest truth is that it's all the gun you need. They have everything you need and nothing you don't. And you can probably hand it on down to your grandkids.

It's pretty close to a classic, like the M98 Mauser, M1 Garand, and 1911 Colt. One of these days there'll probably be a website devoted to them.

I've got one that was I purchased new (at least it was supposed to be) about 8 years ago, supposedly a hold-over that didn't sell.
Paid $275 for it. It is blued, has 6" barrel/adustable sights. Its the most accurate handgun I own. Love it and wouldn't trade it for $475.
