Ruger Security Six cylinder spin

Recently I bought a Ruger Security Six that shows very little signs of use. It was not at all expensive because the cylinder can be turned when the hammer is down with no pressure on the trigger (the revolver is "at rest"). Lock up and timing are normal, in fact, almost as tight as with my new GP 100; but, when letting off the trigger the cylinder latch partially disengages enough to turn the cylinder with little effort. By comparison, the cylinder latch stays completely engaged in the GP 100 when letting off the trigger.

The gun has been dissasembled, thoroughly cleaned, and the cylinder latch replaced with a new latch from Ruger. The problem was not solved.

Is this a normal condition for a Security Six and, if not, then how can it be repaired? Thanks.

Not normal

Tuzo,

The condition you describe is not normal, nor safe. I don't know how to fix it, except that I am sure that Ruger would fix it for you if you return the gun to them. You can call tehm and ask them what is causing the problem and how much they would charge to fix it. Try them on 603-863-3300 (old number I have used) or look them up on the web if that number doesn't still work.

I will second that opinion.

The revolver is NOT safe in it's current condition. Get it repaired before you try to use it for anything.

Sending it back to Ruger is an excellent idea as other elements of the revolver may be "out of spec" but not visible to your eyes. Let Ruger give it a close inspection!

Sounds like the bolt is not falling off the nose of the trigger when the trigger is released. Since it is a malfunction and a safety issue, Ruger will probably fix it for free.

Sending to Ruger

Thanks for the advice. The Security Six will be sent to Ruger today for examination and repair. I'll post a follow-up on this situation.

Security-Six problem solved

I sent my Security-Six to Ruger and it was returned in good working order in less than one month. The revolver was manufactured in 1979 and, if this was any other product, was way past its warranty period. Ruger charged nothing for the repair so I assume the Ruger warranty is for the lifetime of the firearm. My thanks to Ruger for a fine product, friendly and helpful customer service, and expert gunsmiths for a solid repair. I own two Ruger rifles, one semi-automatic pistol, and two revolvers and highly recommend Ruger firearms based on my experiences.

Only complaint concerns federal regulations requiring shipment of firearms via costly overnight express.

That's great. Just for the record, Ruger does not have a written warranty. The majority of us who have sent a gun in have had an experience similar to yours.
