Ruger Scout Rifle

This rifle is sort of growing on me. Does anyone have one? What type of accuracy can I expect? How are the irons? Do you need a scope inside of 100 yards?

The Ruger GSR is a great little "practical" rifle as far as I'm concerned that offers you more versatility that the traditional rifle.

You can configure the rifle to the situation instead of trying to find the right situation for the rifle. I've used a forward mounted red dot on mine, open sights, and right now I have a traditional scope, mounted in the traditional location, on mine for the upcoming deer season.

As for accuracy, I have no complaints and find that I'm getting MOA or sub MOA with ammo it likes. I like the rifle so much it has become my 90% Rifle. By that I mean, it will do 90% of what I want a rifle to do for the situations I place it in. The only reason it's not my 100% rifle is that I prefer other calibers for certain hunting situations.

The GSR was not designed as a hunting rifle, defensive rifle, or target rifle, but rather as one rifle that will serve a person in all situations one may need a rifle in. It is optimal at none of these roles, but does very well, hence the term "practical". It embodies the concept of, "One man, one rifle."

Yeah, Dave Petzal (from Gun Nuts) wasn't crazy about the idea until he tried it out. After testing, he said that "this is the rifle I want when the apocalypse strikes".

I was leaning towards an AR in .308, but now I may want the Scout rifle instead. Besides being cheaper, I have to think the simplicity of a bolt action would enable this rifle to last much longer than an AR platform. In the event that parts are not readily available, this is a huge plus.

There is something to be said for a rifle that is easy handling and fun to shoot and can serve in multiple roles. If you use it a lot you are intimately familiar with its handling, sighting, ballistics, etc. When you need a snap shot on a hunt you will have the muscle memory to do it accurately. I am really thinking about getting a GSR for this reason. Probably the same reason a lot of guys put their fun guns (AR15, Garand, SKS, etc.) into the hunt: may not be optimal for hunting but they shoot it so much at the range that it is the most familiar rifle for them and makes sense to take hunting. The GSR kind of reverses that in taking a traditional bolt action hunting rifle and making it handier for other tasks as well.

Just checked this out for the first time today. Yet another on a long list of firearms I "need" to get. :p Now I need to figure out if it will be higher on the list than the M1a...

With open sights and weighing 7 pounds i think that would be a great woods gun, i love the .308 i might need to add this to my need to buy list haha

I've seen some criticize it as an "answer to a question that wasn't asked". I can see that, a little. But throw in a 5 round magazine and as a handy bolt action deer rifle I would buy one in a second. As far as zombie hordes and such, maybe not so much. Would I sell an already proven bolt action to buy this one? Maybe, maybe not. But if I didn't already have one (I don't) and were in the market for one (I might be soon) and if it's as accurate as they say (nothing to put in parenthesis here) then I would seriously consider picking this up.
My .02 cents.

I've sort of lost my mind with jealous want for this rifle since reading this threat.

Haven't found one at my LGS yet.

I looked at a few of these at the last gun show I attended, and I liked them. I was in the market for a .308 bolt gun, and they had almost every feature that I wanted. If I were in the market for a second bolt gun, I'd be all over one.

A buddy of mine just bought one a few months ago. He's one of those guys that spends big $$$ on guns and never shoots them. Anyway he paid $1,000 for it and was going to give it to me if I let him use my generator for a week. But I didn't have the heart to take advantege of the situation. I'm sure I'll regret it later.

I want one but I don’t want to stock different ammo if I don’t have to. Nothing wrong with .308 but I’m waiting for it come in 30-06.

if I let him use my generator for a week. But I didn't have the heart to take advantege of the situation.

So you let your buddy spend a week out there in the woods with no lights, no A/C, and having to make coffee and fry eggs on an open fire?

No. I let him him use the generator anyway. He bought two acres across the street from our machine shop to build his new house on and got tired of having no power or lights at night to keep working. But the house he lives in now is 5 minutes away. It wasn't like he was roughing it out in the woods somewhere. I should have taken that scout. Its purty and has never been shot yet.

I shot a buddy's Scout. Forward scope. 100- and 200-yard steel. Easy hitting.

My only gripe is the hang-down mag, since I like to carry a rifle at the balance point. If I owned one, I'd do some creative metal work on a second mag.

It oughta be as good a truck gun as any.

I like mine very much. BUT I do like it much better with a 5 round mag. Much more compact than the 10 round.

Shoots well. Irons at 50 yards with so so ammunition was just about an inch, and I am sure much better with some glass on it.

Nice light and handy. Tough to beat.
