Ruger ROA

Idaho Spud

Wish to thanks those that responded to my thread on BP ML rifle, but unfortunately I spent most of the budget on a ROA. This gun's been available for a month or so here and I finally yielded to the Siren song. Gun was a consignment sale by the very same guy who originally sold the gun in '90 or '91. (he couldn't remember) to the (consigning) owner. It's blue, great condition, the owner was obviously meticulous in his care of it. I know SS is the way to go with these, but couldn't resist. Someone will surely ask: $371 OTD. Bought box of Speer 457 balls, too. Mebbee tomorrow.

You stole it!!! ROA's are great shooters... doesn't matter blued or SS.

Congrats!!!!

Thanks, guys. It's my second BP gun of any kind. Couldn't believe it was still available. Actually left the establishment, then returned on wife's recommendation! Didn't wanna disappoint HER! Pretty cool, huh?

Wanted a Rem BP revolver (eventually) and wanted to keep things period correct but I just couldn't pass it by. Not into CAS or anything so gonna just enjoy this one. Any personal experience appreciated.

Shoot it and shoot it alot. As to the wife getting you to go back; a Keeper for sure. Blued or SS they're all made like tanks and darn fine shooters. I started with one then another followed me home. I also ended up with a few others, thanks to my son and auction bids that were too low to win! That's how I ended up in the Walker club also, now that's a TANK!!!:D

I have had a few black powder pistols.
Got rid of them all but one.

I still have my blued ROA.

Enough said...

Update: Nipples came out easily with thin-wall nutdriver socket. That was pleasant. Like I said the guy seemed to be a careful cleaner. #10 CCI caps need 2 strikes (too tight) so will try #11's and if all goes according to Hoyle I'm sure they'll be too loose. Nothin' changes.

My ROA with standard nipples liked Remington #11's never failed to fire and I put them on with my fingers didn't have a capper or anything like that. But I could kick myself in the butt for selling it. But I'll just get another one ;)

No one in my locale carries Rems of either persuasion and I'm too cheap (poor) to pay hazmat fees, so just make do. Want to shoot this thing, but too cold to load in the shop so will try it in the house if Mrs. allows. Gotta make a 45 wad puncher, should be easy. Gonna use 30 grs. of Pyro first try.

Yep 30 grains is what mine liked, Ruger said that you can put as much powder in as will allow you to seat the ball. Don't worry she's a tank she can handle it too. But 30 grains is what I got the best groups with. CCI #11 caps were ok too, I just liked the remingtons better I didn't have to push them as hard to get em on.

I have a blue one too. I use #11 cci caps on the ruger nipples. The 10's are too tight! I just bought some tresco nipples for spares but I don't know what caps they take yet. I've put 40 grains of 777 fffg just to try and she did kick with that load. 30 grains gives me the best accuracy with either Hornady or speer balls. I just bought two more pietta's from cabelas that haven't come in yet I just couldn't resist their sale prices. So now I'll be up to 4 cap & ball revolvers. Who said they aren't addictive??

my best Load in my ROA is
triple 777 3F
38 grains: I can stuff 40 grains but a little harder to seat the ball
50 cal. wad
Round Ball
NO Grease Top Lube
I think the ball is moving very fast

As Peter Boyle said..."Holy Crap"

$371?!

You should definitely turn yourself in tothe authorities.

I don't know any state in which theft is legal.
