Ruger Redhawk packable?

Hi guys and gals; I've been away for about two months. It's nice to be back. I know, let's start a bear post! Just kidding. I'm considering buying a ruger redhawk with a 51/2" barrel. Is it a reasonable gun (weight wise) to wear in a holster for any lenght of time? What's your weight limit for a holster gun? Best regards, J.Parker

In the winter, when I can wear heavy cloths I carry a Dan Wesson 44Mag with a 4 in barrel. I carry it strong side on the hip. The weight doesn't bother me. I'm 6-2 at about 230lbs.

Six inch "N" frame Smith here daily for twenty plus years. It does depend on the indivual though. I'm sure some where there is someone willing and dedicated enough (read: crazy) to carry a Howitzer.
Bottom line if it feels good to you and you are compitent with it, carry it.

This would definitely not,IMO, be anywhere near the first pick for a concealed carry piece. Dont get me wrong, if you can only afford one pistol or revolver, carry what you have!

I love well-made revolvers and have owned a few Rugers and Smiths; still do. Revolvers are also good carry pieces. However, the Redhawk is one of the heaviest of revolver frames, which gives it it's superior strength. This also makes it OK for field carry but not the best for the more difficult appications of concealed carry, plus it's more bulky.

If you are speaking of field carry, it isn't bad in a well made holster that supports the weight well, if you are big enough that it doesn't drag you down. It is certainly a great piece and a very good value.

If you can afford it, buy the Redhawk and another smaller one for CCW.

Good Luck,

Dave

I often carry my Redhawk when bird-hunting across country in deer season. I use an old GI pistol belt and locate the right-side holster just forward of my left hip. Out of the way, but available if needed.

One option, which I'm hoping to do with my own 5.5" Redhawk, is Hamilton Bowen's "Alpine" package. He shortens the Redhawk barrel to 4", does a trigger job, and round butts the grip frame and original grips. Options include his own adjustable steel rear sight, beveled cylinder edges, etc. See:

Own three 5.5" Redhawks (41, 44, 45) and carry them in a Milt Sparks HRS.

Perfect for woods (or cold-weather mean streets).

I'm 5'9", 180lbs.

I carry a 5.5" Redhawk in the field using an old Bianchi X-15 (great model number if you're a 50's vintage guy!) shoulder rig. This holster works for all sorts of large frame applications including my 6" Anaconda. I'm 5"10" l85 lbs,. and it's not a problem to carry a big .44 this way. If I'm in a concealed carry situation and forced to use a .44 mag, however, I resort to a 4" Smith 629, which is much lighter and, relatively speaking, easier to conceal.

Thanks - I should've been able to figure it out. Anyhoo, that Alpine package looks like just the thing to turn a 4-pound, 14" long club into a gun I can actually use.

That's my thought too. I just have to get around to shipping it off. You'll have the best "Mountain Gun" in existence when it comes back... :D
