Ruger Redhawk Alaskan

"I'm interested.
The hard part will be trying to decide between .454 and .480 Ruger! I want both!

Remember you can always shoot 45colt ammo through your 454. What else can one shoot through a 480 Ruger?

I know. That's the strongest reason to go with .454. A compact and very strong .45 Colt with the capability to go even further. But honestly that is only a big deal to somebody who shoots factory loads. I've got dozens of guns that have never fired even one round of factory ammo. So I could handload .480 to whatever level I wanted. And I am intrigued about the power you could get out of .480 without the _nearly_ intolerable amount of blast and recoil you get from .454.

And a unique caliber like .480 can be a good thing when you have LOTS of guns. .45 Colt is just SUCH a popular caliber. I have loaded some near .44 Magnum .45 Colts for one of my Bisley Vaqueros. I mark the box and I mark the rounds. But I'm always worried that somehow one of them is going to end up in a revolver that can't handle them. An Alaskan in .454 would just make that worse. Hotter .45 Colts would become a normal loaded round in my ammuntion area. On the other hand, I don't have any .480's at all. Every round I loaded would be unique for that one gun. There is something to be said for that.

I'm not ragging on .454 now. I want to get one at some point. And I might well decide it makes the most sense for an Alaskan. But .480 would be interesting.

I have yet to take up handloading so it isn't a big deal but for future reference, will the 357 sp101 I just bought handle the 'ruger only' loads?

Typically, the "Ruger only" loads usually refers to the fact that you can beef up .45 colt loadings to crazy pressures that would ruin a lot of other guns. The .357 mag is probably considered to be near the top of its capacity where it is so no one really gives "+P" loads for it (not that such a thing technically exists).

Oh yes! I want one in 454 so I can shoot heavy 45 colt loads too! I love the look of it. Now if I can only lay hands on one to see how it fits my hand.
