Ruger Police Service Six

I just picked up a well used service six in .357. I was wondering if anyone has ever added an adjustable rear sight to one? I want to do a little modification and then have the revolver re-finished. Also, any tips on what ammo to avoid or any other info on these?

Oh, and this is my first post!

:D

I don't know about putting an adjustable sight on your Service-Six. However, there is no problem with having to avoid any particular ammunition! The Ruger Service-Six is a very strong gun and it was designed from the ground up to fire any of the factory loaded .357 rounds! It's strength, is one of it's greatest assets! It's also one fine(And, reliable!)revolver! It is considerably stronger than the S&W K-frame's! These guns are still a great bargain, in view of their quality & strength!:D

Just if you didn't know...Ruger made an adjustable sight version called the Security Six. Would probably be easier to find one of those instead of paying a gunsmith to add adjustable sights to yours.

They're good guns, though. Like said above...strong and "serviceable". Maybe not as nice a trigger or finish job as an older Smith, but they gotta save the money somewhere.

Security Six

I picked up a Security Six last month and shot it some. Nice gun... double action is a little hard.... with that said...I think adjustible sights are over rated on a pistol. I like the suggestion above... if you can afford it down the road get a Security Six too...then you will have both and can let us know.

Well, the previous owner of this revolver did some mods to it already. The action is buttery smooth. They added a little ball lock to the crane, chamferred (spelling??) the cylinder, it has a spurless hammer and they crowned the muzzle. I am puzzled over 3 small screws that are in the top strap. It's all professional looking and the gun locks up tight as can be. Oh well, maybe I'll just get her refinished and put a better set of grips on it and shoot the fire out of it!

If it has three small screws in the top strap it may have been drilled and tapped for a scope mount.

I like my Police Service Six better than my Security Sixes.
It should shoot POA. Ruger was better at things like this back then. Mine does with pretty much anything I put through it so an adjustable sight is kinda usless in it..and BTW it really really really likes 158 grain loads. 125s are A OK but it seems to be built around the 158 loads.

I have several Rugers, Speed Six, The Service Six both in 2 3/4 inch one in stainless and one in blue. I also have the Security Six with a six inch barrel. You should not hurt these guns with normal loads. Great guns.

Sigh ...

The only remaining Ruger medium framed DA revolver I have is a stainless Service Six Heavy Barrel 4". Outstanding revolver. After a lot of Magnum rounds had been fired through it, one day I decided to send it off to MagNaPort and have it ported, crowned, & duty tuned (with charge holes numbered), although I kept a factory full power hammer spring. Then I modified the grip frame to a round butt. I'll never part with it, although I seldom use it or carry it anymore. A Quad-Ported SP-101 2.25" DAO gets the duty for .357 Magnum off-duty usage nowadays ...

Anyhow, I've also owned a fair number of Ruger Security/Service/Speed Sixes, in barrel lengths ranging from 2 3/4" - 6". Only one of them had some timing/end shake issues develop.

I'd probably pick up a nice used one if I ever came across one at the right price, or, I may simply pick up a GP-100 3" if I find one at a good price, either with the full shroud or half shroud ...

Sturdy, decent, affordable and reliable revolvers. The triggers aren't S&W or Colt quality, granted, but they fill a market niche.

I also wouldn't bother having an adjustable sight added to a fixed sight Ruger S/S, either ... but that's just me.
