Ruger Pistol Drill

My father has a Ruger precision pistol drill that he purchased at an auction and was wondering if anyone knew more of the history behind it! The frame of it looks like a Mark pistol but on top there is a crank and where the barrel should be there is a bit on the top it has ruger and the words pat pending! If anyone could help me with id on this it would be most appreciated!

This was a product of the Ruger Corporation, which I believe went Chapter 7 and was succeeded by Sturm, Ruger. Bill Ruger began a hand tool business after WWII, while working on his pistol idea. You can see the predecessor to the Ruger pistol in the handle of the Ruger drill.

These drills are coveted collector items in the Ruger community. There are a couple of minor variations. Value is strongly affected by the amount of red paint that remains.

Regards,

Walt
PS I think my memory serves ;) .

Wow!

That is really interesting! It looks like you could just about make that drill into a Mark I minus the upper assembly with not too much drilling and milling.

I went to the gunbroker site and copied the pics because I thought they were just that amazing and an interesting view for the forum. If this violates any Firing Line policy or the original owner doesn't want them posted, I'll be happy to delete them.

No It was the predecessor to the mark series so it was made before Bill Ruger even made guns! The outlne of a mark can be seen in it though and im sure Ruger took a look at what he had already designed and bam made the mark!
