Ruger P97

After owning a Glock 21 (which of all the .45's I have shot it has been the most accurate--mine is good for 1.7 inch groups @ 25 yards with most ammo), I would like to hear about the Ruger P97's accuracy. The price is right, but I would like to know how accurate the P97 is-- target shooting is my main interest and I want groups under 2.5 inches at 25 yards if possible. Also, what kind of recoil should I expect (the Glock 21 feels like very mild recoil to me).

I do not have a P97, but most of what I have seen or heard is good in reference to it. Many seem to believe that the P90 is the better Ruger for target shooting, but it is truely up to you.

Rugers are not designed for target shooting. consider a 1911 if bullseye is your goal.

A friend of mine has one. It is relatively accurate and has not jammed in over 1000 rounds. The recoil was not bad at all and comparable to my USP .45, although it was a little stiffer than the HK.

The P-97 is very accurate for a compact carry gun (3.9" barrel) but it`s no bullseye pistol. I wouldn`t be suprised if certain loads could do 2.5" at 25yds. but on the average it may be a bit too much to expect. I`ve outshot my share for Glocks,USPs and *&*s with mine though. :) Marcus

I tried it, its a nice forum. Is there a Glock forum out there like this one?

I have one. I have not done any shooting at 25 yards. I have done some at 10 yards and I got groups of .75"with UMC,Blazer,S&B and Winchester 185 Grain Silver tip ammo. I have less than 1000 rounds through her with no jams of any kind-----JHP, Ball, Winclean BEB, 185 grain, 230 grain, etc.

The trigger is better than my old P90 and it's much thinner. The top rear of the slide is serrated as well for better manipulation. The trigger is also polished. It breaks down very easily. Putting it back together can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing. It is nothing once you figure it out.

I thought the frame would need a glock sock for better gripping but nothing could be further from the truth. I bought this gun because it was so cheap and I sold a Beretta 92FS to get it and had money left over. I am glad I did. I hated that locking block on the Beretta and I cannot figure out for the live of me why we would want our young men and women to be put in a position where they have to fiddle and fumble around with it in a combat situation. Otherwise, the Beretta was reliable and a tack driver.

I have been Known to trade alot but I think this one is a keeper. I know it will be with me on the deer lease this year, Lord willing.

Get it. For the money it is the best .45ACP available today. Mags and holsters are everywhere for it. Oh and its max capacity is 9 rounds.

Can't beat a tuned 1911 for target shooting.

My Ruger P97 is as good/better than any Glock, SIG, USP, S&W 45, most stock 1911s I have ever had/shot. More recoil/flip than the Glock, less than the others.

BTW, the barrel on the P97 is 4.1875 inches, 4 and 3/16ths. :)

I had a P97 but I traded it in for a Glock 30. Only reason I did this was I wanted a compact that would match my issue gun (G21).

I loved my P97. I wouldn't get it for target though. It was very accurate for a service pistol but you can't find barrels and other devices to increase accuracy.
The other reason I got my Glock was because of the availability of upgrade parts.

I have heard a lot of people say this. Makes me really interested in picking up a P97 soon.

I tried out Rugers other polymer pistol (the 9mm P95) recently and it had awesome accuracy-- comparable to Sigs I have shot and owned. I would hope the .45 polymer has comparable accuracy but the feedback I am getting suggests the .45 only has good accuracy. Still, I think the P97 might be a good buy for me as a reliable/durable workhorse?

My Ruger P97 shoots almost as accruately as my Glock 21. No jams so far.

On the Ruger forum the P-97 is generally accepted to me more accurate than the P-95 by a noticable margin. I wouldn`t put a P-97 in a velvet lined glass case but as a workhorse it`s an great choice. Mine`s certainly a keeper! :) Marcus

Mine's DAO. I was able to bench 3 shot groups of both 165HS(Pers. Def.) and Silvertip of 1.5" and 1.75"(or vise versa). Five round groups still stay about 2.5", if I do my part. :)
