Ruger P97

I noticed that this pistol has been mentioned a few times but not a lot of discussion on it. Does anyone have any experience with it? I'm thinking of adding a big bore to the defense battery and this could be it.

I would also like to here more about this. Last time i read about it was may be lastmonth in handguns or guns and ammo. They reported it was a great gun but thats all i remember i will try to find the artical and read up on it.

Mine's DAO & I love it. Have posted replies several times commenting on it. The standard version just got a stellar review by Ayoob in his annual publication. It's been on the newstand in my town about one-three weeks.

Buzz and House- I picked up a used(basically NIB 50 rounds fired) P97DC about a month ago for 199 bucks at Four Seasons. It was my first .45(love the round so much I bought a Glock 30 for CCW a few weeks ago). The 97 is well made, nice slim single stack grip(put a Houge Handall on it) and hits everything I point it at. Its one of those I can't believe that I paid 200.00 for a gun that is so good :) Rugers get some bashing here and there but this is one tough, accurate, reliable and fun gun to shoot.

People told me I stole the gun for that price but a brand new one should only run you about 100 bucks more. Ayoob did give it a stellar review in his magazine and quite a few other mags are praising it(big suprise huh? A gun rag praising a gun :))

A cinch to break down and clean. Believe it or not, all this praise is coming from a hard core Glock user. Go for it, you won't be sorry especially for the price.

The only drawback that some people seem to complain about is the trigger returns to full length for each SA shot so there is a bit of takeup. I got used to it after 50 rounds. No prob if you get the DAO.

Good Luck

Great gun, I think I got mine in September, but have only put about 400 rnds thru it( because it has to share its time at the range with all the othe handguns). It has reliably fed everything I have put thru it with great accuracy. This is the best $500.00 gun that I ever got for $340.00.

Thanks for the info guys i was also wondering my local gun shop is selling them for 349.98 is this a go buy? Also how will it handel corbon ammo and other high performanc loads?

Thanks House

House, I'm finally picking up mine this morning from JCArmory in North Jersey. I'm paying 285.00, new in box. I've had this on hold since the beginning of January, waiting for Jersey permits to come through, so I don't know if the price is current. If you have a local dealer that will do transfers, E-mail Gregory at http://pages.hotbot.com/biz/jcarmory/ for current cost. Just remember that you will have to add shipping, and the transfer fee, so it may or may not be a better deal. Good Luck, David

I just bought a P97DC. I've only got about 200 rounds through it. I've used 230 FMJ American Eagle and UMC yellow box and 185 gr FMJ SWC Federal Gold Match. I've had one FTF with the Gold Match otherwise its worked perfectly. Either it or me consistenly shoot to the left. The UMC goups better than the AE.

The trigger does not return to the full DA position when firing SA although it does have considerable take up. Despite that, I much prefer the SA to the DA so I would recommend getting the decocker instead of the DAO.

I paid $370 NIB at a local gun shop. Overall, based on my brief experience, it seems to be well made, reliable, easy to strip and reassemble, reasonably accurate, and relatively light and compact. For the price I think its pretty great deal.

Oh yeah, its a pussycat to shoot :)

I'm planning on buying one also when I get my tax return. Is there alot of accessories and high cap mags available?

Thanks,

Shok

Just so you can make an informed decision:
The DAO has two trigger pulls, as does a Glock. They are just not dramatically "distinct" from one another. When dry firing, the hammer falls all the way forward, presenting the longer of the two pulls. When chambered, the hammer resets back about 1/8th to 3/16ths of an inch, with an equally shorter pull. This obviously carries over to each succeeding round fired.
Some people like the "secod strike" capability, whereas I believe in Tap/Rack/Assess in the event of a dud. I do appreciate not having to reset the slide manually when dry practicing. I'm also conditioning my finger with the longer pull, making actual firing practice smoother and easier when I go to the range. :)

Buzz, if at all possible, try to find a dealer w/one in stock. Here in Phoenix, I couldn't. The only "DAO" that's popular here is the big G. The DA pull of the standard DA/SA is somewhat heavier than my pistol, but not nearly as smooth. The extra lockwork needed maybe? Anyhow, when my dealer called Davidson's, they had five DAO's and over 2,000 regular models. Gives you some indication, eh?
Spare 8-rd mags were in stock at two dealers for only $25 ea. Doesn't get much more reasonable than that. The only mod I did was to "stipple" the front and rear straps to make it less slippery. Did this outside and well ventilated, as the frame is supposedly a fiberglass/resin compound. Did not show any "fibers" at all, though. No probs have surfaced. Hope this helps.

Buz, Picked mine up this morning, cleaned it, and just got back from the range. I did indeed pay only $285, and it was definitely brand new. My dealer must have gotten a great price from his distributor. I noticed that some posts are referring to the "DAO" model - mine is the "DC" Decocker model - if that makes a difference. When I stripped it, I was really impressed with the fit and finish - much better than I would expect for a gun in this price range. I put 100 rounds of Fiocchi 230 gr. ball through it, and am absolutely thrilled! I was a little concerned that with the short barrel and light 27 oz. weight, that recoil might be a problem. I found it very manageable, and accurate. The recoil actually felt lighter than my new Walther P-99 .40, which I also picked up today. :D Even at $350 this gun is a great buy.

Just to echo Gus, mine is also the DC model. I was equally impressed with the fit and finish for a gun in this price range. Its a breeze to clean also and Rugers customer service is top notch.

To hash it all over again, if you want a big bore gun without breaking your wallet, get the 97. Now if I couls just find a holster for it :( (Thats about the only negative thing I could say about it :))

I'm holding a Bianchi holster in my hand right now. Sorry don't see a model number on it...

It fits my 97 like a glove. Ya know one of those holsters that is molded to the gun.

I've had my P97 for about 8 months. I've put about 2000 rounds through it. I think I've finally broken the damn thing in, lol

Only prob I've had with it is it doesen't like limp wristing. This was my very first gun ever, and I started out with a .45. I would hold the gun too tight and print all over the place... people told me not to white knucle it.. and I would limp wrist it and jam the gun. So they were all my fault.. other than that never failed me.

And like someone else said.. get a Houge! You'll want to sleep with this gun after you get one, lol

Gotta agree with F the S. I don't have the 97, but was having some problem shooting my P85, namely "printing all over the sheet". Got a set of Hogue wraparounds for it, and problem solved (and yeah, I did sleep with it, at least until I switched pieces).
Carry in a Waldon Viper, and it does a fine job of concealing even a big chunk of iron like P85.

I know that the idea is to get rid of excess grease, but what exactly do you clean and how do you clean it with a new Ruger P97? I'm rather new to the biz and would love to know.

Thanks a boonch!
