Ruger P97 problem / question

My new P97 sometimes fails to fully chamber a round when loading from a locked back slide or from hand cocking. The round gets stuck about half way in, then goes the rest of the way when you push the slide. This seems to be happening with just one factory mag. But, the mag looks fine. The ammo is PMC FMJ. There is no problem with jams when shooting. Does anyone have any explaination?

Also, does anyone else find the mag release difficult to use due to it being slick, narrow, stiff, and short?

FWIW, this gun is ACCURATE! The last thing I want is to find something wrong with it.

Mag's

If you can Try some different magazines and ammo. I think you'll find you have a bad magazine.
Better yet Call ruger customer service, they can help you out and probably send you a new magazine.

There Number is 1-520-778-6555

Ed2000,

How are you "hand cocking"?

More than likely, the problem is the magazine. Subtle differences in feed lips can cause malfunctions.

However, I wonder if you're easing the slide into battery or letting it recoil into battery. I was taught not to milk a slide. The slide is made to recoil sharply, so the proper way to place the gun into battery is to grab the slide firmly between the palm and the fingers, rack it it back quickly, and release the slide. Using the palm and all four finger utilizes large muscle memory instead of fine motor skills. This technique therefore works more consistently under pressure. Easing a slide into battery can result in failures to feed.

More likely than not, the probem can be traced to the magazine. If your other magazine doesn't cause the problem, then check the feed lips. No dents or dings? Also check to see if they're parallel (or inclining equally). Check it from the top, back and from the front. You may also want to check the follower. See if there's any burrs on it.

If you can't find the problem, write Ruger and complain. They'll probably exchange the magazine for a new one.
