Ruger P97 jamming

New P97 jamming on FMJ ammo after @ 50 rounds. It shouldnt be the ammo and gun was thoroughly cleaned. Shells hanging up half way into the chamber. Also had 1 failure to extract. Ruger says it may be a bad extractor. Anyone had similar problems?

Such problems are virtually unheard of from a Ruger P-series pistol. Take Ruger's word for it. Send it in and let them fix it. Yes, it's inconvenient, but you don't need that kind of problem.

I had a P97 once, and it never malfunctioned on me. Okay, it malfunctioned once, but that was my fault because the magazine wasn't fully inserted.

No failures to report with my P90 after 700 rounds. If ruger says the extractor may be bad, send it in.

I don't know if this is an issue with Rugers, but some guns have problems after using the steel-case Wolf brand ammo. From what i have been able to discover, that steel-case stuff IS hard on extractor/ejector parts.

As a rule of thumb, the p97 extractor can either be too much or too little tension. It must be just right for optimal eject and feed.

I adjusted mine once for FTE and ended up with FTF and had to back off the bend a Bit. Wait for the new one to arrive if you're not into trial and error smithing. The new one will arrive with detailed instructions how to replace.

I just got my P97 back from ruger last week, it had the same problem. I bought mine from my local dealer which had the Davidson's gaurantee so they picked up the freight. The only thing I can see they replaced was the ejector, which took approximately 8 weeks.

I put about 400 rds. through it this past sunday and it shoots excellent, more accurate than when I shipped it in and no FTE or FTF's at all. This is a great gun and wouldn't trade mine at all. Definitely ship it back now I waited till I had 800 rds. through it tinkering with to see if I could fix. The 8 weeks is a long time but it's worth the wait.

Nope dont get the Glock.
Both my ruger P90 and P95 have 5000 to 7000 rounds through each, with no troubles and still look new. They have been perfect combat pistols, very accurate to. They eat any ammo I feed em and spit out the seed very accuratly.
With the money saved, There are some nice accesorys you can buy.
Listen to Ruger they will do you right.

Thanks for the advice on the Glock, but I've got a 17 already. I like it okay. Maybe I'm crazy, but I like the Ruger better. It feels better in my hands, it shoots better (to me), and I like the way it looks. I actually like this gun as much as any I've got. When I get this P97 fixed and the new wears off, I'm going to get a P95 DAO.

Quote from a wise woman

Tamara's Law Number Twelve:

If: Someone asks for a recommendation on a gun, any gun (long gun, revolver, shotgun, whatever),

Then: within five posts, someone will recommend a Glock.

JohnKSa, I do use a looser grip. However, I have a Glock and HK USP, both polymer, that I use a looser grip with and no problems. I also do not start having the problem until 40-50 rounds or so. You may be right, but I hope not.

In my experiences with the Ruger P-series of pistols, including the P95 and P97, I fed thousands of FMJ rounds, underpowered unjacketed lead, and the wide-mouthed hollowpoints, and have never had any soft of misfeed.

The Ruger P95 and P97 are also rather weighty for a polymer framed pistol, and generally give the limpwristed folks a better margin of error.

Send your P97 back. Even though Ruger's warranty is written in fuzzy Algorespeak, they will make things right. Once your gun comes back, you will enjoy an indestructible handgun that will demonstrate the utmost in reliability.

friend had a ruger 9mm (sorry don't know rugers numbers)

Had feed and extract problems when it was new. He sent it in and it came back great. Worked fine ever since

I sent my P95 back cause the trigger was gritty in SA it came back smooth as silk and breaks 3.5#. They replaced the sear and hammer assembly and polished them up.

Ruger will take care of it..

Keep us updated about it.
