Ruger P97 Impressions

Took it to the range yesterday and put about 150rds thru it. GA Arms 230gr +P JHP/American Eagle and GA Arms 230gr FMJ. One FTF with a Gold Dot JHP at about round 70. Gun was brand new and trigger pull was stiff but I did notice improvement by the end of the session. After other posts here I put a Hogue sleeve on it before even starting. Accuracy was poor in DA due to me and stiff trigger pull. SA accuracy was about 3in at 25yds but again it was probably me. It has been a long time since I shot a 45acp having gone to mostly 9mm with my collection.I would fire and then wait to see where the bullet was going to hit.It seemed like slow motion. This gun appears to be about the same size as a 1911 by just looking at it. I will have to put about 1000rds thru it to see how it will settle down and shoot.

My P97 has an excellent trigger pull in SA, and a slightly above average DA trigger pull. You have two main options IMO:

1. Send back to Ruger and ask them to smooth out the DA trigger (and SA too if necessary). In my experience, Ruger goes out of the way to make their customers happy-- everytime I sent one of my guns in, theyv'e done work for free.

2. Hope that it smoothes out with time. It may, but no gaurantee. You may want to put break free or other lubricant on the trigger parts (in case grime is causing it to be heavy).

Rugers in general are known for smoothing out after you shoot em awhile. I think it`s due to the investment castings used in everything. They make for strong parts but Ruger doesn`t always finish the edges and such the nicest. I hurried my P-97 along a little but taking the trigger assy. apart and gingerly smoothing out the rough spots and doing a little polishing. Between that, a little grease and a Wolff 20lb. (stock is 22lb.) mainspring the trigger is pretty darn nice. :) Marcus
