Ruger P95 vs. P97--Opinions?

Hey there. Need some opinions on these two models. I read the whole thread on 9mm vs. .45, and I have no preference. I have shot both well, with a little better results with the 9mm, probably due to lower recoil. However, in a high stress situation, recoil is going to be a non-factor, IMHO. I think that recoil is more of a concern for target shooting, and smaller or younger shooters that are not strong enough to control the pistol.
That being said, I have narrowed my search to these two pistols. All you Glockoholics out there save your breath, I have owned a G19, and it was flawless. Never should have sold it. However, have heard very encouraging things about both of these Rugers, and with the low price AND rebate, can't pass it up.
Then again, my shop does have a 92fs for 479.00. Hmmm...

SO-- any opinions or experiences out there? Thanks for your response.

I have had a P95 for several years and several thousand rounds through it without a hitch. With one exception (operator error), have never had any problems with it at all. It eats all ammo fed it, is very accurate, extremely reliable, ammo is inexpensive and it eats any ammo fed it.

The exception, during IDPA practice, after shooting single handed from the hip after draw, I was transitioning to both hands as acquiring a second, farther away target. I squeezed the trigger before the transition was complete, hit the slide as it was coming back with my weak hand thumb and induced a jam, the first one ever. Can't blame the Ruger, just the trigger actuator.

I also have a Ruger P95 and a P90. The p95 has at least 8,000 rounds through it and still looks new and functions like new. Eats most all ammo without a berp. The only FTF and FTE which have been few and far between have been ammo caused.

That seems to be the typical response from P95 owners--reliable and accurate. Still would like to hear from the P97's out there, though.

Tonyz, what brand of slip on is on the 95? Does it make a big difference in grip?

Doc,
I'll add a vote for the P95. Mine eats everything I feed it, even Wolf, and goes bang every time I ask it to. Always has and I guess it always will!!!! The slip is a Hogue handall. Improves the grip 100%!!!!

The P95 and P97 are almost the same gun, except for differences necessary because of the calibers. I have a P95, and love it, but would have no worries about carrying a P97 instead. In fact, if I ever find a job again (been laid off 4 months now) I might just pick up a P97.

I have a P95, and it has been nothing but reliable with everything I fed it. I shoot 4" off-hand groups at 25 yards with it. It is, to me, one of the best buys out there.

the p97 addressed the only shortcoming of the p90...comfort of the grip.

most of my trigger time has been with the p95 and p90, both belonging to friends. the p95 is a pretty big gun for only 10 rounds of 9mm and i always found the p90 more accurate.

i also felt that the p90 was stronger as it was originally designed to chamber the 10mm round

i like the feel of the p97, just don't got the buck right now :(

Have a p90 and p95.

Great weapons. If you want lighter weight and less recoil, which you said doesn't matter, the p95 is sweet.

My wife loves her p95.

I am thinking about a grip for my p90, but it is very comfy to shoot. Shot 233 in CHL class with hot brass sticking under my collar from the guy next to me (250 is perfect).

Reliable, inexpensive and accurate. What more could you ask for.

I've hear that you can get preban p89 hi cap mags that fit the p95

I've had both. The P95 was flawless and I regret selling it. The P97 is having failure to fully feed from the slidelock position. I think it is a weak recoil spring. Ruger is mailing me a new one. The gun feels great and has not jammed when firing. It is match grade accurate out of the box. Both guns have great triggers. The p97 is more accurate. The P97 will benefit from a slip on grip. If the new recoil spring fixes the minor problem I am having, I will be saying the p97 is the best .45 EVER!

Doc M,

I had both prior to being bit by the CZ bug. Both functioned flawlessly. Added the Hogue HandAll grip to both which made a good thing even better. I'm planning on getting another P95 soon as I do "need" another 9mm. :)

Hicap mags are available for the P95. I bought a pair of USA listed for the P85/P89. Several hundred rounds later they still function fine - no failures of any kind. Finish of base plate is not as estheticly pleasing as factory originals, but they work well.

I have a P97 DC and it shoots better than my $1,ooo 1911.It has not ever had a FTF and has a great trigger. The only thing that it lacks is the amount of holsters that are made for it.

I've had a P90 and a P944----both were good guns---accurate and reliable---I just couldn't get over the weight and blockyness.

This past week I had it in my head I was going to get a P95---the rebate was really tempting me------I just couldn't bring myself to do it-----it was too big and ugly-----and I'm the Rugerfreak.

There is a Glock 19 on lay-a-way for me down at the shop now.

KP97D

I'll speak for the 97 crowd. I have one and I love it. It has a great natural point, is easily controlled and the recoil is very controllable. The weapon is very comfortable, has nice sights and is very accurate out of the box. The weapon digests any ammo I've thrown at it and I have never had a single jam or any other issues at all.

I prefer the .45 caliber over 9mm. This is solely a personal preference and anything I write will be biased towards the .45 as the best man-stopper in the biz.
