I will be purchasing a .22lr pistol in a couple days and I would like some input as to which one I should get.

First off let me say that I own 2 SIG handguns (P220 and a P226). I also own a Springfield 1911.

I would like a .22lr pistol for casual target shooting and plinking. I can get the Ruger 22/45 P512 for ~ $210 locally or I can get the Hammerli/SIG Trailside for $390 locally as well.

I alreay know the fine weapons Sig makes, but have also heard very good things about the Ruger .22 autoloaders.

Do you guys think I'd be happy with the Ruger or is the Sig so much better than the Ruger to justify it being almost twice the price? $210 vs $390 hmmmmm??

I figure I could get a nice little red dot scope for the Ruger and stilll be under the price of the SIG.

What do ya think??

What about the Browning Buckmark or Camper thrown into the mix...how does it compare to both the Ruger and Sig? The price is roughly the same as the Ruger I think,

Thanks!

Nathan..

If you just want a .22 to shoot, buy the Ruger. If you are looking for an entry level target pistol, buy the Trailside. The Trailside is reviewed in the March issue of Shooting Times.

What model Trailside is selling for $390? In Texas, the Standard Trailside is selling for about $350.

The regular model Trailside is selling for $390 here in Colorado Springs. They don't budge on the SIG prices. I have tried. :

Crawdor is right on. Unless you're going to compete, go with the Ruger. Super accurate, inexpensive and excellent customer service. I doubt the Sig will shoot 2x as good as the Ruger. I love mine and don't think you can go wrong with it.

But the trailside will make you feel 2X as neat for owning it. And it is thin and sexy and new. And after you buy the Ruger, you will still WANT the Sig and why not get it if you can afford it.

If you can afford it, you deserve it.

Greetings; I would purchase the Ruger MK-II
KMK 512, for general plinking and informal
target work; then take the difference and
buy my girl friend a bouquet of ammunition
for St. Valentine's Day!!!! :)PS: I guess
that might apply to wive's as well; if you
have one? :(

Generally speaking, the SIG will shoot groups at least half if not one third the size of the Ruger groups. I have seen the Ruger test targets for the Govt model and for the Trailside. There is no comparison. The Ruger will group 1", the SIG will group not more than 1/2", many closer to 1/4".

According to the article in Shooting Times, Sig rejects any Trailside "that groups larger than one inch at 25 meters." The author checked the test targets for a dozen pistols: "not one wasn't a single ragged hole." 25 yard groups in the review were from 0.33" (CCI 40-gr. Pistol Match) to 1.13" (Winchester 40-gr. T22).
