hello,
im wondering what you fine folks think of the ruger P series semi-autos. In particular the 89 and 95.

Are there any certain models or calibers to stay away from or look out for?
Any certain model that is superb?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
MAURICE

In short the P95 is one of the finest pistols for the cheap price tag to date. For three years I owned one and never had a failure.

They are blocky, not the best CCW gun and not exactly the prettiest gun. For $300 NIB you cant go worng.

Great guns and you will see that most here will say the same.

The P85 was at the bottom of the barrel in the FBI pistol evals of the late 80s. So was the Glock, and look what they issue now?

The Ruger failed the M10 pistol trials too.

OTOH, seem to be one of the most durable and trouble free guns at high volume rental ranges.

A friend went through an advanced pistol course at a federal training facility w his Ruger P90. Got a lot of teasing from the SIGsters and Glocksters, but at the end of the course, he was near the top, and his gun was the only gun that hadn't choked.;)

The P95 is one fine pistol!!!! I have had one for years. The only thing I do not like about it is that it is a tad to big for concealed carry, but then again, Bill Ruger didn't think that lowly civilians should be allowed to hide their weapons!!! Mine is dead on accurate with the smoothest trigger of all my pistols. It is also quite the omnivore. It even eats wolves!!!:D If you want a reliable pistol, but you don't want to shell out a lot of your hard earned after tax dollars, then the P95 is the way to go!!!;)

I love my P95. As for CCW, I carry it in a High Noon "Hideaway" holster under a denim vest or untucked chambray shirt. It's not light, but it is comforting.

I like my P97DC. Great gun. Great price. Accurate. My other .45 is a Springfield Armory Mil Spec M1911A1, although I just got that. It's only 100 rds old. The Ruger on the other hand has about 700 rds through it. I never had a FTF. In colder weather I carry it in a Don Hume holster on my strong side. In summer, it's a Tomcat in the pocket. Or S&W M60 and a camp shirt.

Have a P95DC and love it. Never a malfunction of any kind. Fixing to add a P97 to the collection.

Took a while to get used to the P95DC but it grows on me. I am getting better an better with it. Do a lot of dry firing with it. The more I use it the more I like it. Like Arub and looking at adding a P97.

I have a P95 and when I was carrying it, it rode quite comortably in the small of my back. Can't carry now, however, as I live in Missouri, where there is no CCw as of yet. I wear lots of good, somewhat oversized polo shirts and have never had any problems concealing it.

Also, of all the handguns I have owned, the P95 has never choked on anything I fed it. Accurate, too!

ive got one question about em.
i see a hammer on them, but ive heard they are d/a.
is teh first round d/a,then the rest are single action?

could someone explain this to me,please?

MAURICE -
A double action pistol is not nessecarily double action only. When the term "double action" is properly used, it means that the pistol can either be cocked or not cocked for each shot. In the case of an automatic, the pistol would remain cocked for all shots after the first. To bring the hammer down, one would have to decock it. A single action must be cocked for the first shot. A double action may be cocked but does not have to be. A double action only cannot be cocked prior to any of the shots.

Hi Maurice,

Recent threads here at TFL indicate to
prospective buyer's to avoid the
P89, for reasons that some poster's list?

Best Wishes,

Ala Dan,
I just was just wondering why should he avoid the P89? I did a search and didn't find anything. I know the P95 has improvments over the P89 (tigger, lock up etc...) but thats all I know. I know the P85 had problems when they came out. Could you please shed some light on this for me? Cause I already have the P95 and was thinking of getting the P89 also.
Thanks
Scott

MAURICE take a long lokk at the ...

MAURICE, take a long look at the P89. Why? I have owned a P85 MKII, just about the same pistol, for years and years. I had trouble with accuracy when I first bought it. Ruger laser sighted the P85 MKII for free and the problem went away. I have never had a misfire or jam in over 10 years. Regards, Richard

The P-89 is nothing more than a re-named P-85 II, and thats not a bad place to be. The II addressed some reliability and parts breakage issues and Ruger wisely re-named the series in order to get away from the original number series, and IMO, the 89's are as accurate and reliable as they come. Have shot a half dozen of them and they all work very well. Only reason I don't own one is I really don't care for 9mm so much as I do the 45ACP. I don't seem to get the accuracy out of the P90 as I do Colt's 1991, but could be I'm just spoiled on the trigger.

MAURICE....

Got both of them - the P89 and P95. Love'em both. The P89 is a tad bit more accurate than the P95, IMO, but they both do GOOD. As has already been mentioned here, they'll eat anything I feed 'em. Easy to clean and maintain, rugged, just plain all-round good guns. ;)

My first P89DC was a beautifully crafted high-capacity 9mm that couldn't hit a target if I taped the muzzle to it. In short it was a total POS. Took it back for warranty work and nothing changed. Demanded my money back and bought a S&W 915. About 2 years later a buddy bought a Ruger KP89DC which shot like a dream and punched nice little groups. I bought it from him and was very happy with it.

Have a P89,

and it's a good gun. Not quite as accurate as my Sig's, but for about half the price it's accurate enough. :D It has never failed to quite happily eat everything I feed it. Very happy with it!
