Ruger P-95 vs Glock 17

I have a Glock 17 and it was a jam-o-matic believe it or not. It would not feed Winchester or Magtech ammo. I did get it to feed Wolf pretty well. But for $600, it should feed damn well anything I put into it. The gunstore owner polished the feed ramp and told me he shot 46 rounds through it, including a clip of reloads, and had no problems at all. Still, I'm intrigued by the Ruger P-95 for the following reasons:

1. According to previous posts, this gun will feed ANYTHING and function flawlessly.

2. They have 15 rd magazines for under $20 each. Does that sound right for factory magazines or are they probably aftermarket?

I figure even if the Glock works fine, it wouldn't hurt to have another 9 mm pistol. I always hear that the Ruger is the "best value for the money", but which would you prefer, money aside?

I like Ruger, particularly the GP-100. However, I find their autos to be somewhat chunky and large for my medium to small hands. If they fit your hands well, I say go for it. Good guns, though. Excellent value.

I don't know of ANY places that sells 15 round factory mags for $20.00... sounds like they were aftermarket. You might be able to find some in Shotgun News, but you have no clue before hand what their condition is. Mine cost me $50.00 from a local shop, but it's in great shape and I picked it out of several. I like my P-95 a lot, and you will too.

Send your Glock back to the factory and get it fixed!! I've had a Glock 17, and know of many others. I've never seen one with feed problems. Could it be magazines?

On the other hand, I've also had a Ruger P-95, and consider it a fine gun. A good match for the Glock 17, but a little heavier, I think.

The new Ruger P-95 and P-97, while they look larger, aren't as large as they look, and they are significant improvements over the older P-series pistols. And for the money, they're hard to beat. (The CZ-75 might beat the P-95...)

GIJoe; The Ruger P-95 is THE best buy on the market. It's packable, very, very reliable, and durable. I would only use factory or Mec-gar hi-caps. The factories will run about $50 and the Mec-gars about $30. With a Hogue slip-on it feels great in the hand. You just can't go wrong with a P-95, simple as that. Good Luck, J. Parker

I love my P-95. Tough, eats everything, and is accurate. It feels pretty good in my hands and I can get off fast follow-up shots on target. What more could you ask for?

I agree with everyone above. My only problem with the P95 was that the trigger pull was long and gave me troubles. My friends all had no problems with it, just me. I say buy it because it is a great gun for the money.

Time for one of those what gun equals what car topics, but I am to lazy, and too uncreative to start one, plus i live by the famous line from "The Simpsons"-"Can't someone else do it?". Glocks are great guns, Rugers are great guns although I don have persoanl experience with the P95.

As previously posted: ship the Glock in to the factory. Something is very odd here. The G17 is one of the most reliable pistols ever made. When they came out I hated them. I wound up buying my daughter one. That should tell you what I think of them now.

I have both a P95, and a G19. The G17 was,and still is way to big for my hand. However both of these fit!!!??? Both are reliable to a fault, and will eat anything you care to feed them, including wolf.
I haven't seen a $20 15rnd Ruger mag in years, at least not factory. The last 15rnd'ers I got cost me $40, and that was 3 years ago!!!!! However I did see some aftermarket mags at last years gunshow for $30, but I passed them by. I buy factory mags.

Ditto the above on the pistol. As for hi-caps, I gave $21 apiece for 15 rounders made by USA Mag at a gun show, but saw the same ones two aisles over for $40. The USA mags work fine.

Cheaper Than Dirt also had some P-series Hi-caps in their catalog. I don't remember the price but I don't think it was very high. The hi-cap mags from earlier 9mms will work.

I don't get it! I have four Glocks, I have shot a lot more, and I have never encountered one with feeding problems. Call Glock and ask to speak to an armorer. Regards, Richard.

Send the Glock back with the mags you're using. As others have said, there's someting not right with your pistol.

I used to a large and congested visit range where the most popular rentals were a G17 and G19. I spoke to the owner several times about them. He told me that the G17s got rented an average of twice a day. He estimated that they were fired a minimum of 500 rounds weekly. The only problem he encountered, after some 40,000 rounds, was that the trigger spring snapped on one of the G17s. No other problem whatsoever.

Two 9mm pistols? Well, my recommendation would be to get your G17 repaired (Glock customer service is excellent), and then buy a second Glock.

Is the Ruger a good buy? Absolutely. I personally find the mag release a bit awkward, but that's just one man's opinion. But once you get your Glock up and running, I can't see why you'd want anything else.

If you just want something different in addition to the Glock, then don't overlook the CZ-75, also an excellent value.

Thanks for the replies. I did take the Glock back to the owner who said he would ship it back to the factory. After 2 weeks, I went back and he told me that he didn't send it back but polished the feed ramp. He told me he shot 46 rounds through it, including a clip of reloads, and had no problems whatsoever. Maybe it was just me. I'll have to test it out. By the way, I did get the Ruger P-95 along with 3 extra factory mags and 3 15 rd Pro-Mags (you were right about them being aftermarket). I really don't know why, but now I have 2 9 mm handguns that are considered among the best of their kind.

If I may ask, how much did you pay for the P95?

I was just at the gun store for about 2 hours (guns everywhere, the smell of ammo, and free AC, we are talking a law chair and a beer shy of the perfect environment)

I went to see if they had the Steyr M40 in yet. Nope. So I tried every 40 the had there. I liked the Ruger.... A LOT.

I might end up buying one!!!

The price difference between the Ruger and the Steyr would buy me quite a few boxes of practice ammo... We'll have to see though. But definitely as far as "bang for the buck" the Ruger's are tough to beat.

Twoblink:

I paid $329 not including taxes for the gun. It was NIB with 2 magazines. The 3 10 round factory mags cost me $12.95 each and the Pro-Mags were $19.95 each. The dealer is a big Ruger fan and while I haven't shot my P-95 or P-97, I have had good experiences with my 10-22, Mini 14, and GP-100.

Keep the Glock and send it back to the factory or better yet. go to your dealer and swap it with another one of his new ones and have him work it out with Glock.

But the P-85 isn't even close to a Glock.

I went to the range yesterday to test the Glock 17 and once again it was a jam-o-matic. I will send it back to the factory. I don't know what the gunstore owner did that I did not, but this is the most jam-o-matic gun that I've fired yet. Hopefully, this is just a rare exception. Believe it or not, my AB-10 outperformed the Glock though it joined in the jam festivities later on. Thank God for the SAR-1.
