Ruger Old Army Recoil

Hey.

I'm wondering how the recoil is on a 5 1/2inch Ruger Old Army.
Like... Compared to a certain cartridge, possibly?

Thanks,

Laslow,

The word "RECOIL" would never come to mind when I was thinking of shooting my Ruger Old Army using cap and balls. I say when using cap and balls because there are cartridge conversions for this gun. The Ruger Old Army is a blackpowder revolver as you most likely know. Blackpowder in such a revolver does not produce a "kick" like modern guns, but more of a gentle push. Even with the heaviest blackpowder loads my Old Army is fun to shoot and only produces a medium push. If I had to compare it to a modern cartridge, then maybe a standard velocity 38 special. Good luck. hope it helps.

Depends. I am guilty of loading a ROA or three over what is normally suggested. That really kicks. I have hunted with conicals in a ROA a few times. The cartridge conversions to 45 Long Colt work well. They recoil soft with 45 LC CAS loads. I feel that black powder works good in the ROA. The cartridge conversions add to the utility. If you don't like recoil, use black powder and purchase Black Hills black powder 45 LC cartridges also. The ROA is a decent sporting piece with the longer barrels. Great for CAS in 5.5". The cartridge conversions are not cheap, it is almost the cost of a used Vaquero. If I really wanted to shoot 45 LC, I would simply buy a used Vaquero.
