Ruger No 1s Questions

I'm ordering one in 6.5x55, but they also have a stainless one in 250 Savage, and I'm wondering if that is a worthwhile caliber. I know it's a classic.

A 257 Roberts would be more significant than a 250 Savage.
For your 6.5x55 .There are now two sets of dimensions in ammo and chamber .If you reload and want the best out of it make sure what you have in the chamber - the 6.5x55 SE [the European specs ] or the American case with the smaller rim and body. You certainly need this for max accuracy ,to get the best from a cartridge known to be very accurate.

For many years , any 6.5mm cartridge was treated worse than a red-headed step-child.

But as them wiley Scandanavian hunters/riflemen know , the 6.5x55 Swede and their long freight train bullets with their high SD/BC , will penetrate a big ol' elk or caribou completely and drop it like a bolt from the blue with 1 well placed shot from a LONG way away. With the import of all those Swedish Mausers , there has been a lot of R&D on the 6.5mm and quite a few new bullets.

Mete, I'm not sure what you mean by two sets of dimensions. Are you saying there are two sets with regard to ammunition only, or with the rifles as well?

As to the 250 Savage vs 257 Roberts, how much difference?

if your a handloader your probably going to see 200 fps differnce between the 257 and the 250. Im a big fan of both. If you hunt in an area where 300 yards is rare and 200 is about all your going to shoot at theres not a more wonderful round then the 250. It has about no recoil and is very accurate in my guns. If i had to stretch it to 300 id probably load some 87 sierras and not look back. Ive killed a truck load of deer with the 250 and have never found it lacking. Its the rifle I started my wife and my son on and they still use theres exclusively. Its probably not the round your going to want if 350-500 yard shooting is on your plate but for typical whitetail country its hard to beat. By the way if your using factory ammo theres not spit differnce between the two as the 250 is loaded pretty mild from the factory but the 257 is loaded extreamly light.

The 250 Savage is a fantastic cartridge. Were the #1 to be chamber for it in a blued #1A confirguration, I'd jump, but not stainless. The classic style of the rifle just deserves blued steel and walnut.
The 6.5x55 is certainly a formidable cartridge in it's own right though. You'll be well served with it.

The .250 Savage is one of the truly unsung and lamentably forgotten cartridges of the 20th century.

It's generally exceptionally accurate, has light recoil, has more than adequate power for just about anything in North America.

The .257 Roberts will give somewhat better ballistic performance, but they're in the same class and there's really not a lot to differentiate the two.

Hmmm. Thanks, guys. I really like the more obscure calibers, especially the classics. I'm probably going to get one. It should do OK for hogs, too? I have plenty of hog-busters already, just asking. I mean in the No 1 configuration.

250 Savage. The parent case of my beloved 22-250Rem :) I hold it in high regard on that fact alone :) One of these days I am bound to come across a rifle chambered for it.
