Ruger No.1 International 7x57 input needed

Not about the rifle, but whether or not I should scope it; and if so, what would be a good scope for it.

I was originally going to put a scope on it, but the rifle is so compact, trim and sexy looking just as it is,(it has a 20" barrel) that I'm having second thoughts.

Does anyone shoot one of these or something similar just with irons?

If you scope it , I reccommend an OLD model Burris signature. The adjustment turrent is forward compared to the new models, and it positions them perfectly without using some kind of goofy extension ring. Last time I looked they were still turning up on ebay at decent prices. I have 2.5 x 8 on my #1 and it' perfect.
 
You have a nice rifle. I have a #1B in 30-06 and one day I hope to pick up an International. Mine doesn't have irons but it wears a Leupold 2.5x8 and I think that is about perfect for this rifle.
 
I have the RSI in the m77. What you want is a scope that does not overpower the rifle due to being too large. I have a Leupold 2x7X on a Winchester M70 Featherweight and if I were to change scopes on my RSI it would to use that scope. Great eye relief, bright optics and light weight. What's not to like.

Thank you. I think I would appreciate the rifle's capabilities more with a scope but don't want to ruin its clean trim lines with something too big and unwieldy. Good suggestions. Has anyone shot a rifle like this one with the irons?
 
@cmdc: I have a ruger 77 RSI, chambered for .250 savage, and like hodaka's choice of optics, I have a leupold 2.5-8 on it. It works fine and looks fine.

I also have a Ruger 1-A chambered for 7x57, and it has a burris compact 3x9 and the scope conforms well with the trim lines of the rifle. I used the 1-A, 7x57mm for mule deer, and always felt a little overglassed. I think paulB has the right idea, and if I had it to do over I would choose a 2x7.

A scope that I would look at closely for your rifle would be a leupold VX2 ultralight, variable 2 to 7X (under 10 inches and smaller objective). If you want to spend a little less money, burris makes a smaller "timberline" version which is variable 3X to 9X. However, my choice would still be the leupold ultralight.
 
I had two Ruger No. 1's rebarreled.

They were originally 1A's, and I had NECG peep sights for them which fit on the Ruger scope mounts.

I thought long and hard, and decided that the importance of accuracy with a single shot rifle outweighed appearance.

I had the gunsmith keep the short barrel of the 1A, but add a tapered forend, long enough for a sling swivel. Sort of a 1AB but without iron sights.

And they have Zeiss 3-9X40 scopes.

Kind of funny-looking, but they shoot... :)
 
Good points all. I'm going to look into the Leupold 2-7s. I'll let you know what I end up with and take a pic and post it.

I put an NECG (New England Custom Gun) clip-on peep sight (google) on the rear of the rib of the one I had & called it good.

It allowed keeping the rifle lightweight/slim.

@cmdc: Best regards! Half the fun of a new gun or scope is the planning and selection process.

And as petahw and dmazur, said, NECG make great products for iron sighted rifles.

Fine, out to 100 yds or so.

Past that I couldn't see the target as well as with a scope.

For the calibers I had, it seemed a shame to limit them to 100 yds.
 
I had the RSI in 243 a while ago (one I should have kept) - it wore a US-made Burris compact fixed 6X - scale and size just looked right
 
I had the exact model you had and also had the same dilema. For me, I found the perfect choice with a Nikon Monarch African 1-4x20 with a German #4 reticle. I think it looks perfect on this rifle due to no objective bell. Glass was clear and bright, and I think 4 power is plenty on a rig like this. I have attached a picture of the scope.

I like the appearance of the 20mm scope on the #1. Very European looking.

I like the look of that 1-4x20. It is very trim and the 4x will get me out to 200-300 yds I would think on deer-sized game.
 
Nice looking rifles, Saxon. I had my Weaver K-3 with the post on mine for a while. I think it looks better than anything else you can put on them. Unfortunately, 3x is not enough for anything over 200 yds.

I beg to differ. Longest shot I ever made on a deer was 427 paces with a .308 wearing an El Paso Weaver K3. Just this last January my 3x9X Leupold was set on 3X when I shot my elk. Distance was 350 Yards. I probably would have set it to a higher power but the elk was very nervous and looked like it was about to bolt. Two quick jumps at it would have been into heavy timber.
This hunt was a cull hunt and the elk were very spooky having been hunted hard for the previous three months. My hunting partner had to take a running shot at 317 yards laser measure affter the shot. Two years prior to that I shot my elk at 150 yards running full tilt. Scope was set at 3X that time as well.
I'll be doing another of these hunts come next January and odds are the scope will bet set on 3X once again. These are private ranch hunts.
