I'm doing this backwards, but I bought the rifle, (well, haven't picked it up yet), because I think the Internationals are beautiful, and I have a penchant for less-common calibers. Now I am wanting to know what I can expect from it in the way of accuracy and performance.

I don't have a Ruger #1 in 7X57 so I can't tell you about your rifle.

However, I have a Ruger #1 in 204 Ruger that is accurate as hell, and I know for a fact the 7X57, loaded right is also accurate. There is some nice 7mm match bullets out there.

I would think, if you spent some time working on your loads to find one the rifle likes, you'll end up with a dern good shooter.

You've got one of the great calibers of all time, inherintly accurate. For most deer sized game you might try the Sierra 140 sptitzers which I've loaded in a couple rifles behind 4320 for sub MOA in light rifles. My buddy's shot 3 caribou with this bullet and all went fewer than 5 steps.

We have a #1 in 5x57, or should say I had one until my wife fell in love with it <L>. Very accurate and the first shot from a clean barrel is right on the money. Of course the light barrel heats fast so it is not a great range rifle, but for hunting it is perfect. I got mine at a real fair price, the previous owner said that it would "string" shots and would not hold accuracy. The fix was easy, the sight / scope rail was loose, a little locktite and the problem was solved.

I have one and love it. I also use it for hunting. From a bench I can usually get the first three shots touching, the next two usually open the group up to about 1.5". This is all with less than a minute between shots.

I have a Ruger No. 1 in 45-70 Gov't. Great shooting gun and very accurate in my experience out to 100 yards.

As far as your Ruger No. 1, well, your actual mileage may very but from what I've seen, and my buddy owns a No. 1 in .375 H&H, they are reliable and accurate. Although they do have a reputation for being less than a tack driver.

Thanks, guys, for the input. What are good bullet weights for this rifle? It has a 20" barrel. Also, what would you recommend for a scope? It looks so clean sans scope, that I am tempted to shoot w/o one, but I know that I should really scope it to get the most out of it.

I see that tim s recommends 140s for a a rifle this light, and it is really lightweight. I know that you can go a lot heavier in this caliber, but maybe I wouldn't want to in a rifle like this, with shorter barrel and lightweight. I have a Savage in 7mm-08, and was thinking I could go with heavier bullets with the No. 1 rifle and get more out of the 7mm, but maybe the shorter barrel of this rifle negates that?

i like a muzzle heavy gun. shotgun or rifle. the first time i shot my 7mm international it felt all wrong. sold it soon afterwards. but the gun hobby has room for all kinds of thoughts, thank Goodness....fwiw bobn

The 7x57 originally was a military round but has a long successful record as a hunting round. With a Ruger you can load it to velocities somewhere between the 7mm-08 and 280 Rem .140 to 160 gr will give excellent results for big game .Unfortunately factory loads don't do it justice.

I have the 7X57 rsi as well. I almost through it out the window when I first got it until I discovered the accuracy problems I had with it was the forend cap was touching and placing pressure on the muzzle. 4 inch groups were the norm. After I took out the dremel and re-blued the sander portion, I can get consistent inch groups with handloads. Will check the data when I get home but if loves 140 grainers as well. Easily the most beautiful rifle I own.

The use of the Mauser in the Spanish-American War caused us to give up the Krag and develop the 1903 .

If you're Ruger is not accurate ,you're one of a few that has a problem with the forend. There are a numer of cures for this.

I am going to shoot the rifle soon and will report my experience. The only ammo I have at my disposal right now is Prvi 139 gr. Any scope recommendations?

PTSI, I had the M-77 International, did what you did and free floated the barrel. Went from a 3" gun to a 1.5" gun. Excellent 3 shot groups but barrel gets hot and 5 shot groups really started to open up.

I've often found the weak link in Ruger rifles to be the barrels.

A friend's uncle had a .220 Swift that was a tack driver, but another had a .30-06 that fouled quite badly and would delivery only mediocre accuracy in part because the bore was horrifically rough, and the crown was not quite right.

That one took considerable bore lapping to smooth everything out and a new crown job, after which it became a competent, but not fantastic, shooter.

I know of others who have had similar issues over the years as well.

If I had a place to shoot it, I'd buy a No. 1, but I'd also be ready to fire lap it, recrown it, and cryo the barrel if I had to.
