Ruger MKll 50th Anniversary Edition problems

I bought a Ruger mk.2 50th anniversary edition a few months back and I have shot several kinds of ammo in it and it jams with all of them. It tends to favor the hyper velocity rounds like the CCI but it still hangs one up from time to time. It really jams alot with the standard ammo and the high velocity 22s. I have cleaned it and lubed it with rem oil and tried different clips too. I have a goverment target model with the bull barrel and it has always been reliable and a sweet shooter but this new anniversary model seems so much rougher it is like they built it on saturday and just slung it together. What can I do short of sending it back that I haven't tried allready? Any comments would be welcome-C.L.

Alot of them have problems. I had an MKII and it had jamming problems with soft lead and lead hollowpoints. I changed to a harder ammo(non HP) and that did the trick. I still sold it and got the newer 22/45 model. The 22/45 only jammed after 950 rounds of cci blazers in 1 day without cleaning (yes i had blisters that day)

Most likely polishing the feed ramp would help but after the ramp gets covered with powder and dirt and grime it'll jam again. If i were you I'd send it back to ruger (dirty) and make them test fire it (dirty) and see what they do. Chances are the mags are nosediving ammo. (like alot of the MKII's do) Maybe there is a faulty ejector or other mechanism. Either way after spending your hard earned money on a gun it should work. Send it back or trade it in on a 22/45!

I have found variations in ammunition, particularly if purchased at places such as Walmart or Kmart. I got a box of 500 remingtons that would misfire about every 40 rounds. Some times I could even feel the difference in recoil between rounds. Since I'm also an instrument machinist, I also examined the feed ramp. It's a shank-milled milled piece. The mill was run straight in at the factory a little too fast. The tool probably should have been changed. I polished the ramp with very fine carborundum paper and it improved the feed. After the polishinf and ammunition change, I haven't had a stoppage in the last 500 rounds.

I, Too, ahve seen problems with misfiring in the Remington bricks. I have not had any trouble in any way with the Federal 550 round copper jacketed bricks Found at Walmart for $9 or so. When they ask "is this for a rifle or pistol, tell 'em to shove it.

Check the archives for the past month or two. There have been a couple of good threads on troubleshooting your MkII.

I have 4 Mark II's [1 is the Anniversary model] and have never had a jamb out of any of them in 1000's of rounds fired , I do clean them completely after each outing . I shoot the Federal 550 round milk carton packs like Frontsight does and never have a problem . Good luck , Mike...

Thanks for the input folks. It's funny you should mention wall mart asking if it's for a rifle or pistol. I always just tell them "rifle"! I did a search on Ruger 22s in the archives before I entered my post and it came up with everything BUT a Ruger 22! I must be doing something wrong when I do a search because I have had this problem before. Well, maybe with time and patience I will figure it out. Or turn my monitor into a 17" TARGET!!! :p

I haven't had any jamming problems with my MkII/450. I've tried lots of ammo, mostly the cheap stuff without any problems. Send it to Ruger and they'll make it right.

One thing I didn't see mentioned here was a break-in for a new gun. I don't consider jamming problems with a centerfire semi-auto to be significant until I've fired at least 200 rounds. I'd suspect that for a .22, you might want to break it in with at least 500 HV rounds before you start worring about trying to make it 100% reliable. Nothing smooths out a new gun better than a few trips to the range. :)

My first "real gun" was the MK II Target Model and it has seen thousands of rounds. The only problem it has ever given me with ammo is the sort of truncated cone stuff that I think was called "yellow jacket" by Remington. Didn't like that ammo at all. Other than that it has faithfully devoured everything else put through it. It loves Stingers and has taken several squirrels with them.

As far as cleaning it, I do that regularly but not completely broken down. First time I did that it took me hours to get that piece back into the grip. Never again.

Good Luck
