have any of you handled or shot the new ruger compact bolt guns yet. I ran across one today in .308. it wore a 16" barrel, was very light, and handy, also quite handsome for a carbine. the only thing i'm not sure about is with it's paper thin barrel, can put out any type of acceptable grouping, that and were talking about a .308 in a gun less than six pounds. Does anyone have any good or bad comments on accuracy recoil or anything else on this gun?

Did Ruger change it's name and barrel length?

I have a little 6 pound "Ultra-Lite" with a 22 inch pencil thin barrel.

The extra lite barrel requires that you fire a 4th shot to heat the barrel up for a 3 shot group. If you don't you get a 3 1/2 inch group instead of 3/4 to 1 11/2 inch group.

I handled a stainless model in .243 a few weeks ago. I was impressed with its lightness and balance. I agree that they are fine looking too. I bet the .308 kicks like a mule, but it sure is handy to carry. I'm sure the barrel would heat up in just a few shots.
If you do a lot of walking and just a little shooting, it would be a great choice.

Talking only about recoil: My Rem700 Ti weighs 6-1/4 pounds with scope, sling and ammo. It's a 7mm08.

With max loads and 140 grain bullets, the recoil on the bench rest is not bad at all. I imagine that offhand--and particularly with Bambi in the crosshairs--recoil not be noticeable.

I have the "Compact" in 243. I was surprised at the light recoil having felt more in 700's. I am loading the Hornady 100 grain BT and the Nosler 100 Partition. The Hornady is grouping about 3/4" at a 100 yards and the Nosler about 1 1/4". I had no "heat" problem up to 12 shots and then could see some in my scope. I fired 3 and checked the target and then another 3.

I looked at a few before ordering 1 in .308, yes it should make a great scout. I think I'm going to paint the stock and then seal it with a urthane coating, haven't been able to find a synthetic stock made for it yet.
