Ruger Mini 14 Questions

What is the stock barrel length? What can be done to increase accuracy? I have read that shortening the barrel has effect. What capacity mags are available and which aftermarket companies are the best for mags? Is there a BOSS type system available or does the muzzle brake help any in accuracy?

Tom B -

This is a topic that has been discussed ad nauseum on the board here. Search for Mini-14 and you will find many, many discussions on this. The consensus seems to be that the Mini-14 is a 4 moa rifle on average, but can be improved with some judicious tinkering.

A Mini 14 thread is usually like a Glock vs 1911 thread. Some AR owners will take the opportunity to trash the Mini 14. Some mini 14 owners will praise their rifles. Take everything anyone tells you with a large grain of salt. The stock barrel length for the Mini 14 is 18½".

Tom,i have a newer Mini 14 ranch rifle that shoots some decent groups at 100 yards.PMI makes the best 20/30/40 round mags that exist.Think they had the contract to make Ruger factory mags long ago. With the factory peep sight i am all over the place at 100 yards.Although "cheesy" looking to me, a 3x9x40 scope tightens the groups up drastically at 100 yards. If i ever for some reason had to sell every pistol/rifle i owned because of hardship, etc.,the Mini would be last to go.Mine seems to love cheap ol' Wolf ammo also ($54.99-500).I have yet to buy the more expensive ammo to see what her true potential is though.I am very pleased with mine!!!!!!!:p

Second the vote for PMI mags, I have five 30 round pre-ban PMI mags and they work flawlessly. Not a bad deal at $10 NIW (purchased a few years ago from ammoman).

Bite the bullet and buy at least a couple of factory high caps, with those, your Ruger will be more reliable than the AR's. Reliability is the Rugers strong point with good mags. Look around and see if your can find some of the 20.30 round mags manufactured by Federal Ordnance, they were good mags, but I don't know if they are still being made.

Never a malfunction with any of my PMI 20 round mags.

There is a BOSS type system available but it is expensive. I think it is by Arizona Response Systems, but I'm not sure. The few posts that have mentioned it said that it did improve accuracy. They will also add a match barrel, but it is also expensive.

Supposedly there are two ways to improve accuracy on a Mini 14 that don't require the big bucks:
1) Shorten barrel
2) Bed the stock

I haven't done either to my Mini cause it shoots okay - about the average accuracy of an AK47.

I suggest that you don't spend a lot a money on "improving" your Mini-14.

I would just spend it on extra mags and ammo.

You can hit a guy in the chest at 100 yards, as is. That's close enough for government work. If you want 1 to 2 MOA, you'll have to another rifle.
