Ruger Mini 14 Owners

In my case, PMI 30 rounders. They work as well as my Ruger factory 20 rounders.

I've shot a bunch of various brands rounds through them and haven't had a malfucntion yet. Rifle is a 182 series GB.

FWIW. J.B.

The most reliable mags I have had access to are the Millet 35 rounders, and believe it or not, the silly-looking Ram-Line Mini-14/AR 30rounders.

My Mini abhors any species of USA mag, and in many cases won't accept them for proper seating.

I have had good luck with the PMI and the Ramline mags. The USA and Western mags are hit and miss at best.

I've been pretty lucky so far. I have bought the cheapest mags I could find at gun shows and they all worked fine.

Ruger never made their own magazines for the Mini and this was a contracted out part. While they never divulged to me who their contractor was, I suspected it was PMI. A side by side comparison convinced me of it.

I have a 183 series Mini-14, It feeds from any mags I give it. It has never jammed on me in 16 years, and thousands of rounds.

Some people have problems with USA mags though, and the Mini has gotten an undeserved bad reputation for that reason.

I have a USA 30 rounder that is flawless. That is after I took a file to it. I have a USA 10 rounder that goes in okay, and shoots okay, I just have a heck of a time ejecting it. I have filed everything I can think of but it still jams up trying to pull it out. I don't use it.

I guess I wonder sometimes? How hard is it to make a reliable magazine?

I mean I have an USA 18 round Glock 17 mag that is total crap. It won't hold the slide back on empty, that is if I can get to empty without some kind of jam.

Who knows?

The magazine ban is the DUMBEST law ever. A little practice and any idiot can eject and load a factory 10 rounder faster than you can say jackrabbit.

Just look what Charles Whitman did with a Remington bolt action.

Just another idiot big feeling law that makes legit shooters reload their mags at the range more often. And it created a black market for hi-cap mags.

Pathetic!

I really like the PMI 20 round mags, got a few and they all work great. I THINK that the longer 30 round mags are more prone to problems, especially the cheaper 30 round mags. Besides, I think the 30 round mags stick out too far from the bottom of the rifle...

I got a couple of no-name ten rounders and they both work well also.

I first bought 4 Stainless steel USA 30rd and almost threw the gun in the trash. I stumbled upon www.TheFiringLine.com and found out I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN PMI MAGS:mad:

A few months ago I was about to throw out the USA mags and someone here told me to get new Mag Followers from www.brownells.com IT WORKED. USA mags have cheap followers but good springs. You may need to bend a few things around but most USA mags can be salvaged. But get the PMI mags if you can. There all in the $35-$40 range now.

I love my Mini-14, but this is the reason why I picked up a cheap Romanian SAR-1 AK clone. I got tired of having to send back magazines that did not work well (I'll say that this will be the death of Mini-14 as reliable mags dry up). With the SAR, $5 mags work perfectly.

PMIs seem to be the best so far. However, I've had PMIs (30 rounders) that did not function 100% and required some smithing to make them fit and function better.

Does anyone have any experience with Thermold? Also, are Thermold mags still available at reasonable prices?

Lastly, I tried Masen 10-round mags. They were really unreliable. Misfed every 2-3 rounds. Does anyone know who makes reliable 10-round mags for the Mini-14? Does PMI?

believe it or not i have several 40,30,20 and of course the stock 5 rounder.all of them work fine.they are no name brands.

Here is my master plan (I have many but few work!) - I have ordered a Mason 10rd and 2 Western 20rd mags. If they fail I will replace the springs with Wolff+ and the followers with Ruger 5rd followers or maybe Brownells. Wolff ofers a 20rd and 30rd spring. This method worked for me with a ProMag BHP mag. It was unreliable new until I installed a Wolff spring.

I purchased ten PMI 30-rounders (both blued & stainless) in '94 right after I bought the stainless Ranch rifle thru my department--have had absolutely no problems with any of the mags or the rifle.

I have seldom heard positive comments about USA magazines.
