Ruger Mark II or 22/45-which would you choose?

Want to get one before the rebates over and can't decide which one.I like the bull barrel 22/45 and the Luger looks of the MarkII.What's your opinion? Are they identical mechanically?

I just made that decision....I bought the MKII with a 5" bull barrel. I was gonna get the 22/45, but I've always liked the original model. No special reason other than that.

I hate the odd magazines on the 22/45 and wouldn't buy one for that reason, a friend thought this was odd and picked on me for, well being picky. I reminded him that he wouldn't buy a dell computer becuase he hated Steven, some kid in the dell ads, plus they are grey. Go figure.

Its going to have to be grip feel choice. The Models are almost the same gun mechanically except that the 22/45 has the mag release on the grip side instead of the bottom of the handle and the mags are differant.
The Ruger model 22/45s, feature a grip angle and magazine latch virtually identical to the 1911 Model .45 ACP.
If you have a range where you could rent the 2 and see which feels better in your hand that would be your best bet. Maybe you could borrow a friends to shoot.

Good Luck

One gunsmith acquaintance of mine says he's seen the receiver frame fit of the polymer 22/45 get sloppy, leading to problems with accuracy, over time. (He shims them to get them tight again.) I've never heard of that before, so it may not be a widespread problem. (And its certainly one that Ruger would fix under warranty.)

If you're into 1911s, then the 22/45 is a natural choice. Otherwise, go for the standard MK II.

Go with the Mark II----I've always had one or another since I was old enough to own handguns-----Just never could really warm up to the 22/45---even though the price is right.

The Mark II is built like a tank(see above)----the 22/45 just seems cheap.

I prefer the Mk II for looks and for the way it feels in my hand. You should try both and choose the one you shoot better.

I bought the Mark II

I shot the 22/45 and the Browning Buckmark at the range before buying. The 22/45's grip may be a good angle, but the shape and the slippery texture make it so that it didn't fit my hand (nor that of my friends) very well. Shoot it if you can - some people think the angle and controls are worth it.
The buckmark had a great grip and shot well. But I got a good price on a Mark II target model, and the thing is built like a tank. The grips on the GC model are pretty good.

Doing it again, I'd probably get the Mark II in stainless bull barrel with 5.5" barrel, then swap out the grips for aftermarket grips. The scope mounts on the GC models aren't such a big deal, since you'd probably get a red dot on "So-Low" mounts for target shooting. New grips and the scope mount add up to less than $100. The extra barrel length doesn't seem to improve accuracy, and a red dot sight makes sight radius kind of irrelevant.

The nice thing about the 22/45 is that it comes in a model with a 4" bull barrel.

They're close mechanicly, but not identical. I have both and prefer the .22/45 for all the reasons stated so far. That plus the trigger is better, in part I believe because the guts of the trigger rub against polymer instead of steel. It just seems smoother to me.

One .22/45 I have has run through somewhere around 35K rounds in about two years of shooting. I shot it twice a week, at least, for slmost 2 straight years, took it home and filed stripped it after each session. I haven't noticed any looseness of reciever to frame fit, or any wear of the polymer lug that holds the reciever in place. I figure that all that shooting is about what a typical plinker is going to see in a typical lifetime, so I wouldn't be too concerned about wear.

I tried both and bought a Mk II 5.5 bull barrel. They're both fine weapons but I liked the Mk II feel better (I also like my Steyr M9 which has a similar grip angle). Some people hate the grip angle. Try em both if possible.

I do like the bull barrel and would enourage you to consider that regardless of the model.

My MKII is my favorite pistol, the one I always shoot everytime at the range, and is just a pleasure to shoot. Everyone should have a .22 target pistol.

I have a Ruger 22/45 , and i like it better than mk II.
I have put about 1,500 rounds threw it so far , and
have found it to be pretty acurate. It did take about
500 rounds to break in in , it jammed when it was new.
But currently it's a great gun. Imo It's more comfortable than the
MK II .
