Ruger M77 MKII (2004) scope ring question.

Hey everyone. I recently acquired a Ruger Target Varmint made before the Hawkeye models. I was wondering what rings I need to mount a 40mm scope on it. I want the low rings or the medium rings, also need to know if both rings will be the same because I don't see any target grey sets. Just single rings.
Thanks for your help!

The Hawkeye and MK-II will use same rings. Because of the way Ruger receivers are made you will need a taller ringmount on the rear. You buy each ring separately. Low's should work with most 40mm scopes on a sporter barrel, but if your's has a heavy bull barrel go with mediums. You will need a high ring for the rear, medium for the front. The rear receiver bridge is machined lower, so you need a taller ring there. Not at all unusual. Many other rifles do the same and use a thicker base on the rear. Since Rugers don't have a separate base the rings need to be taller on the rear.

They do make target gray. Rugers website is not easy to use.

Go to "shop ruger.com" on the home page

Click "scope rings" on the left

Click on "family" and select 77MK-II

Click on "model" and then select the exact model you have

You will then get the options you need.

This may help too.

If still confused, Call Ruger. Might be best anyway.

My model isn't listed on their website as it was custom built and ordered for the RMEF. It is a heavy bull barrel. And action and barrel are the target grey. So I'm sure it will still be high in the rear medium in the front then? Also is there a front and rear specific ring?

High ring on the rear and medium on the front should be OK. Except for maybe the finish (matte, gloss and etc.) on Ruger rings, should be no difference in fit of Ruger rings as to a certain ring for a certain Ruger model of 77 family of rifles .

But as previous gent wrote....calling Ruger is a good idea.

Also is there a front and rear specific ring?

No, either ring can go in either location. Shorter ring to the front.

Last time I bought Ruger rings, the sales guy said that they had gone to a numbering system. #3, short/ #4, medium/ #5, tall/, #6, extra tall.

I have 3 VT models and think highly of them, however the Ruger rings can be a bit of a problem at least mine were. Maybe Ruger has learned to finish the bore (inside surface) of the rings but mine were not well finished with numerous high spots. The mounting slots on the receiver are CNC machined and are as they should be but the bore alignment of the rings themselves is not perfect. I highly recommend that you lap the rings or have it done by a gunsmith as the factory stock rings can twist and pinch the tube. Once the rings are fitted to the tube the whole assembly can be removed and replaced on the receiver without any shift in POI.

Once you understand Ruger system it makes sense. Either ring can be used front or rear. This way you only have to buy 1 ring if you change to a different height scope. They come from the factory with a high ring for the rear and a medium on the front for medium height scopes.

If you need to go taller you only need to buy one ring, extra high. Put it on the rear, move the high ring to the front and take off the medium.

If you want to go lower, buy a low ring. Put it on the front and use the medium on the rear.

When you get to the model option on Rugers website click on "Target Gray Target". I bet that is what you want.

In your case I'd still call Ruger to place the order just to be sure.
