The Ruger LCR series of revolvers are some of the best guns to come out of the fire-arms industry for a long time.

I got the LCR38 recently. standard FMJ loads are plenty for my wife and kid to fire one cylinder and go to the LCR22. I really like the trigger on it.... thinking about getting it magna-ported for them to use later....

If you get it magnaported, JERRYS, I want to hear about it, please. I am a porting junkie, and I've thought about magnaporting a lot on a variety of guns.

magna-port int. did a great job on my 640-1, makes shooting full hose magnums like shooting +p 38s.

I have to save up for a while before I can send in my LCR 38.

Doc,"Magna-Port"is a company. One service they offer is the cutting of slits or round ports around the barrel at the muzzle. The main benefit is reduction of felt recoil. The term you asked about refers to this process. And yes it works. :D

There are different ways to go with porting. Whether slits or holes, the idea is to put gas release ports near the end of the barrel so that hot gasses can escape upwards upon firing. This applies force downwards to counter the muzzle rise of recoil. Aftermarket jobs often cut them in pairs along the sides to make a Y-shaped force vector.

Pros:

  • It generally does what it is supposed to do.

Cons:

  • Releasing those gasses upwards or in a V-shape from the sides of the barrel increases noise on the user side and firing-line sides of the gun.
  • It can slightly reduce bullet velocity, if that matters to you.
  • It adds something to clean.
  • It adds a "hot zone" to the gun. Normally, you know to keep fingers (etc.) away from the cylinder gap while firing. This is because hot gasses and debris are blasting out! Porting not only adds a new place for this to occur behind the muzzle, it adds a rather focused place for it to occur. In the crazy world of self-defense shooting, it could matter.

For more on the controversy, here is a fun write-up.

That's really interesting regarding Blazer. I've definitely fired more than 1,000 rounds of Blazer Brass (and some Blazer aluminum) through my XD V-10, but since I've never pointed the ports at my face, I've never noticed if pieces of metal were flying out of the ports.

Also, I have blown a port out with an extended ported barrel (not the problem-free factory ported barrel) from EFK. I'm not sure if that was from frangible ammunition or a squib or what.
