Ruger LCR 38 Special With Laser

I have a Stainless Steel Colt Python 4 inch barrel that I bought around 1985 new. It's in very good condition as I only tested it one at a firing range after I bought it and then cleaned it. The darn thing is too heavy for me now (I am 65) so I will sell it to a gun store. Any idea about what it's worth?

For a lighter gun I am considering the Ruger LCR with the aiming laser. Probably weighs 1/4 what the Python weighs. Does anyone have experience with this gun? Thanks.

I got my wife an LCR and she loves it. I think the size is too small for me and due to the light weight it has a pretty good recoil.

Overall I would buy it again. I do love the colts! Where are you, this old retired LEO might be interested in your colt.

It is pretty cool!

I am 2 hours north of Vegas and will be at the Knott's car show in April.

How close are you to Buena Park?

PM me and I will give you my phone number.

I rented a LCR 38 at the range and hated it just shooting standard pressure 130gr ammo. I just bought the LCR 357 and have had it to the range once - much easier to shoot 38 from it than the lighter gun Standard 130gr and 158gr were no problem. I tried 110gr+P and it was also OK, 135gr+P not so much. Can't really imagine shooting 357 from it.

do yourself a favor and sign up for an account on Gunbroker. It is easy and doesn't cost anything. You can then see what guns like yours are currently selling for by reviewing the completed auctions. You might be surprised.

Value is so dependent on exactly what you have. The box and paper/tools that originally came with it are important to realizing the best price.

My brief review of like new in box with papers is between $3-5K. But it depends on exactly what you have and its condition.

Good luck.

Thanks Mel but my boss (my wife) will not let me sell it to a private party due to legal and liability issues either real or perceived.

I recently sold a Smith 686 through a Local Gun Shop. They put it on Gun Broker for me and it sold in two weeks for the going rate as shown by checking the completed sales for a while back.

I didn't have to do a thing and they only charged 15 percent.

With a deal like that you really can't go wrong.

You might make a few phone calls to see if you could do the same. You have a desirable item that will go for a high price.

No problem Rick. I retired from law enforcement in CA. Would still be cool to meet up. Nice to have allies in Kalifornia.

:D

My boss (wife) might not let me buy any more anyway.

I like my LCR 38Spcl. just fine. Very nice trigger, light weight, and easy to carry in a coat pocket, or Hybrid IWB holster. I don't find the recoil of Speer Gold Dot 135 gr. +P Short Barrel objectionable in the least. It shoot swith completely adequate accuracy in my LCR. I do not use electronic gimmicks for sighting with a self defense weapon. I won't trust my life to circuits and batteries. I did switch out the front sight to the XS white dot with tritium night sight dot. Not so much for the glow in the dark dot, but just the normal white dot is all the help my 68 year old eyes need.
But if you feel more confident with the electronics, and realize that they may not always be there when you need them, so actually learn, and practice to shoot without them, the LCR is a very nice revolver to mount one on.

A lot of good points @cheapshooter. I do disagree with your comment about the Speer 135+P. *For me* that load is objectionable in my KLCR. I can shoot it but it stings pretty good. The 110+P is more controllable *for me*. But I have several other brands on mail order I want to try.

A good set of night sights is a must for an LCR as well, Ruger makes sight changes a cinch too which is nice. I'd like to add them to my S&W 642 but can't as the sights are milled into the frame, not so with Ruger!

I won't try to guess the value of your Python. But I will say that it is worth Waaay more than any gun store would give you.
