Ruger LCP Custom--Excellent!

So far at least. Saw the ads for these, the main difference is a metal custom trigger, higher profile sights, and steel guide rod. $350 plus tax at the Crossroads Show in Glendale last weekend.

Only 50 rounds down range on its first test tonight, no malfs.

But boy is the trigger fantastic, and with the more prominent sights, the effective range is essentially DOUBLED over my original LCP. 15 yards is now a realistic fighting distance. Very sweet trigger.

The new front sight is kind of a "night" sight too, lightable with a flashlight and pretty bright, at least for awhile.

My original LCP is the only pocket pistol I have kept out of the several I have owned, mainly because it has been reliable. If my new Custom also proves to be reliable, it is a major leap forward for this model.

My original LCP (372-prefix) has a steel guide rod. Did they change that at some point?

I really like the look of the LCP custom but I'm worried the sights will get snaggy on my pocket holster.

I carried an elsie for years and loved it but decided to move up to her big brother the LC9s pro; but am having some issues adjusting to it. My old lcp wasn't near as nice as the newer one, but I could still get most of the mag into a milk jug at fighting distances. Love that gun. : )

Glad you're enjoying it and thanks for the report. I have a "2nd gen" LCP and the trigger is way better than the older models. I could take or leave the sights as it's really just a point and shoot, last resort gun. Mine has been 100%!! Oh yeah, I have the stainless slide version.

For what it is I have never had any complaints about my 1st generation Elsie Pea. It's a pocket pistol intended for personal protection. Not a target gun, or military/police duty weapon.
From the very first round to what ever number approaching 1000 I have fired through it it has been 100% reliable with whatever I have fed it. It has also been acceptably accurate at any distance it would be used at to defend myself.
That being said I am glad that they are "improving" this great deep concealment pistol for those who always came up with some sort of criticism.

It is steel but it is pretty soft so some users have experienced gouging along the length and peening on the end. The custom version must be the same harder steel as what is offered by some of the aftermarket companies.

I've got a used LCP from Gunbroker that is in the process of being shipped right now. After watching the Youtube vids about the various mods, I'm definately going to change the recoil spring and add the Hogue grip cover. I'll probably also add the Sweet Pea trigger (which I believe is the same as what the Custom comes with) but that might come later.

Several of the videos commented that the best modification for the buck was that Hogue grip.

The Hogue is the one modification I have done to my Elsie Pea 1st Gen. That has been a recent mod at that. Not as a felt recoil reduction, I have experienced exactly zero problem with the recoil. But it does give the gun a very much improved feel without any detriment to concealability.

LockedBreech as noted above you are right about the recoil spring rod. The Custom one says it's polished stainless steel, so maybe more durable or slicker.

And the sights are now really tall on the Custom, my Recluse one-sided pocket holster won't hold it. Fortunately I have a stash of others that do.

I am not sure how much of an improvement the Custom is over the current regular LCP, as I recall Ruger improved the trigger and increased the sights at some point.

But the improvement over the original model is dramatic. As I said, a 7-yard gun now feels good to 15. Still keeping my original of course....

I recall my initial criticisms of the LCP as including the sights, the heavy long trigger, and the felt recoil. Probably with the newer version and definitely with the Custom, Ruger has fixed two of the three. I find that a Pachmayr Tactical Grip Glove helps a lot with the recoil sting, and maybe I'm getting used to it anyway.

I owned the 1st gen LCP for a while but when I felt the trigger on the new models, I had to have one. I broke Cheapshooter's rule and sold it to fund the new LCP.:(

Although it isn't a target gun, that new trigger sure does help me on close range rapid fire scenarios. It's still plenty safe enough to pocket carry on a daily basis in a Nemisis holster. I am still amazed at her accuracy when slow fired.

I have plenty of BIG guns at home in my safe, but Elsie always rides with me no matter what. She's just too dang easy to carry!

What is this Houge grip for the lcp?? Mine is fairly old. I got it when they first came out 07-08. Are the triggers that much better on the newer ones? I thought about getting one of the new customs but don't believe the sights will work with my holster. My lcp is the most carried ccw I have especially since it is getting warmer. Bad thing is I cant shoot with it very well.

The Hogue grip is an overlay. You remove the factory rear frame pin and that little plastic thingy at the bottom of the magazine well. The Hogue grip slides on top of the regular grip and the rear frame pin gets replaced with a new one that is a little longer. It just makes the grip a little bit thicker.

From what I've been able to determine, the trigger on the Gen 2 is better than Gen 1 but still not as nice as the Custom trigger (or the Sweat Pea aftermarket trigger).
