Ruger International Rifles?

What is the mystique? My buddy has a "vintage" Ruger International Bolt action .308 rifle, beautiful stock, low round count, that he thinks is the "cat's meow". While I like the International look and feel, it's not your everyday deer rifle.
Anyone hunt with one?
Besides the .308 caliber, why is it that many Ruger "officianado's" say the International is "all that"?
Looking forward to your opinions.

Some people just get all giggly over Mannlicher stocks. The Ruger Internationals are OK, but not beautiful (too chunky throughout to be a nice Mannlicher stock).

i had a number one international. thought it was kool. first time i shot it i sold it next day. muzzle whip was unreal....fwiw, bobn

I have a model 77 Mk II RSI in .308. My #1 reason for having it is the looks, it's a style that you like or don't like. For my hunting it fits well, most of my shots are under 150 yards and the rifle handles very smoothly. The accuracy so far won't get me any bragging points but since it's accurate enough within my hunting range, and I love the look, I've kept it.

I had one, it shot 3" 3 shot groups. Free floated the barrel, opened up the muzzle cap so that it didn't touch the barrel and I may have bedded the action, but I don't remember. It then shot 1.5" 3 shot groups. 5 shot groups were not so good as the thin barrel heated up quite a bit. My boys shot there first deer with it, one at 75yds and the other at about 200yds. Took a header in some lavas and had to strip and refinish with linseed oil. Finally sold it in a moment of weakness. It was a beautiful shooter.

I've got one in the gun safe. It belongs to my grandson, who got it from his Dad's uncle. It's a 308 and a very pretty one. Maybe Ruger put a bit fancier walnut on those full length stocks. It shoots pretty good, though it does heat up rather quickly. I load up a medium velocity 150 grain SST over IMR3031, though I haven't done any real detailed load development, and I've been impressed by the 3 shot groups (haven't measured any of them). I'll say that the groups can run as low as about an inch. It never goes to the stand, since the grandson always reaches for my 260 Ruger Compact. Maybe I'll take his rifle hunting one of these days. It really is light and easy to handle.

Time for pics. This one's in 250 Savage. One of 248.

Ruger 77 International .243

I own a nice Ruger 77 International in .243 Winchester. It has a nice enough piece of walnut on it but it is a clunky design for a Mannlicher IMO. It shoots 1.5 inch groups for 3 shots and then opens up as things get hot. I wish I had gotten a CZ full stock instead. Their Mannlicher stocks are more in line with the svelte feel and handling qualities I was looking for when I got the Ruger.

Same here in every respect. I will say that I prefer the original Model 77 International in terms of handling-it had a more rounded contour on the fore-end than does its successor. Of course, the original didn't have the controlled feeding nor the three-way safety that the new one has-for whatever that's worth to an individual shooter.

If I have to explain, you'll never understand; if you understand, there's no need to explain.

I love my Ruger MkII RSI's. I have 2, .30-06 and .243 and they are both game getters. Light, handy, pretty wood, and will shoot 1-2 MOA if I do my part. The .243 is a sweetie and took a nice deer for me this year with a 150 yd shot.DRT. It does well on coyotes and fox also. The '06 RSI is a great deer rifle.Recoil is a little stout, along with muzzle blast. It does not like heavy bullets so I stick with 150-165 gr bullets and take some velocity off. Accuracy got better by doing that.No complaints on the receiving end.

I have a Stainless 77 RSI in 7x57mm, and the #1 RSI in the same caliber. I love the look, but agree, with most it's love them, or hate them.
