Ruger Hi Cap Mag Report

Tried 2 new Hi Cap mags in the Ruger P95 today. A Ruger 15rd 9mm mag and a Ruger 11rd 40cal mag that J&G lists a a 14rd 9mm mag also. The 9mm mag worked flawlessly with FMJ and JHP. The 40cal mag did hold 14rds of 9mm but jammed once on each full mag I tried. One was the last JHP in the mag and the other was a FMJ about half way through the mag. Both jams had the bullet nose sticking upward. I am going to attempt to bend the feedlips to get the mag to function (unless someone contacts me in need of a 40cal Hi Cap for a Ruger first).

If I were you, I'd sell it. I wouldn't go altering any mags because it still may not work afterwards. I know I wouldn't buy a bent up forty caliber or a rigged 9mm magazine.

Just My Opinion,
Ben

IIRC, there's an ATF letter specifically on this issue, stating that modifying feedlips to change calibers is "manufacturing" a new hi cap and is therefore a felony issue. Not sure how they'd catch anyone on this unless they posted a public message saying they were going to do this, but that's their position. Not to mention, there's the reliability issue -- can you get it right, and will it stay right? I'd sell it. YMMV.

The only non-factory mag I would ever trust in my KP95 is the MecGar mag (the 15rnd mags work flawlessly). All other aftermarket brands or conversions have questionable reliability, IMHO

I don't know about the P95, but P89s function just fine with USA and ProMag prebans.

I've had good luck with the ProMags and a couple of RamLines that I once owned. The USAs are a no comment. check Auction Arms for ruger factory 9mm mags. They have been available there lately. SamC
