Out of respect of those who desired the thread on grip frame refinishing to be ended, I'll start a new thread regarding Ruger grip panels.
This applies to Ruger Single Sixes, Blackhawks, Super Blackhawks, and Old Armys. The grip frames and their grip panels are:
XR-3: Original grip frame on Single Sixes and Blackhawks. This profile closely matches the Colt SAA grip. Current Vaqueros and Flat Top Blackhawks utilize the same profile, but will not fit older Three Screw grip frames, locating pin is in different location. Original grip frames aluminum, curent grip frames steel.
XR-3RED: Used on Old Army, Single Sixes, and Blackhawks. Slightly modified grip profile. This grip frame was introduced when the ribbed top strap was introduced. Aluminum was used for Single Sixes and Blackhawks. This grip frame is found both in the Three Screw era and the New Model era. With the introduction of the Super Blackhawk in 4 5/8" and 5 1/2" barrel lengths, this grip frame, in steel, was used on these Super Blackhawks.
Dragoon grip frame: Steel and brass. This was used on all 7 1/2" Super Blackhawks. Can be found with both square back trigger guard and round trigger guard. The round trigger guard is common to the SBH Hunter. Some Old Armys were fitted with this grip frame also.
All screw patterns for grip frames are the same on Ruger Single Actions (except the Bearcat) and will interchange between all such guns. Current New Model grip frames can be adapted to be fitted to Old Model Three Screw guns.
The current New Model grip frames can be fitted to New Model Flat Tops, but require the projecting lugs to be ground off. These the lugs that fit into the inside back of the frames.
