Ruger GP100 gone?

Ruger has introduced so many new pistols, revolvers and rifles in the past several years, I am afraid one of my old favorites may be gone. Sometimes Ruger doesn't make a formal announcement when a model is discontinued, they just never produce anymore.

I like the Ruger GP 100 revolvers, especially the 6" blue. I wouldn't "trade you even" for a Python or an S&W 14.

It probably makes no "business sense" for Ruger to make a run of blue steel revolvers. There is very little demand. But for a few of us, there is a certain elegance to the blue steel revolver.

Alas, one of Rugers largest distributors, Davidson's, has not listed an available a 6", blue, GP100 in perhaps several years.

Big gun show in Lakeland this weekend. Am going with money and will be searching diligently. Hope I am lucky.

If you like GP 100's, maybe you should be looking too!

They ARE still in production. The GP 100s are on the website and I just bought a 4" blued one about 3 months ago. Do a little bit of research.

The blued GP is still available in both 4.20" and in 6" according to Ruger. Shop around and you'll find one or better yet, see if a dealer can order one for you.

Well they are not discontinued, but Ruger does pull some marketing "blunders" and quits making good revolvers for no good reason. Remember the half lug GP100 6 inch and 4 inch revolvers. I still am scratching my head on that one. And another one is the Security Six line. Biggest marketing blunder Bill Ruger ever did. Now I know a lot of the members here will say "Ruger did not make any money".
Ruger made and sold well over one million Security Sixes. Tell me if they did not make any money on the Security Six then why did they make over million of them. Seems that there was a demand for them.
Regards,
Howard

Has nothing to do with the demand, had to do with the production cost of the security six's. GP100 is way cheaper to make.

not 100% true, but generally, look at the ages of people and their responses when the blued v. stainless threads come up. Ruger isn't going to put a whole lot into blued models when younger shooters are interested in stainless, nitrided, and chrome. Cheap bluing is less expensive than the other finishes, but that really nice dark blue everyone loves is almost as expensive and not nearly as good, aesthetics aside.

I don't think the GP100 will go anywhere. The Sp101 seems much more endangered to me.

You guys are probably right. I am uncertain if the stainless GP 100 is extinct, but I would be willing to bet $5.00 (big gambler) the blue steel GP 100 is history. And probably with good reason, there are less and less of us "old farts" every day.

Yes, I know they are still in the catelog, but I don't think Ruger is actually producing them.

However, I still like blue steel revolvers!

Deep six those Pythons and handcrafted S&Ws for a modern production Ruger GP 100 you say? Okay. Sure. What is their stock symbol? RGR?

I love my 4" SS GP100 it is a great shooter. But you might be the only one I have ever heard make the above statement. :D

Ruger uses a Lean production method for most of their models now. Orders come in and when demand is enough for a run, they're made. They won't, in good manufacturing sense, cease production of more in-demand models at their expense though. There has been times when even cataloged models don't see any production during a years time though as demand just doesn't warrant the use of resources.

Blkhwk73- did you work at Newport? Because so far you are the only one with the correct answer as to Ruger's production runs. I worked there for a bit and that is how the ship sailed, well at least when I was there in the 2000's.

Neither the GP100 or SP101 or going away anytime soon. The blued GP's are definitely in low demand, but will be made occasionally. I suspect many also like the ease of maintenance on the stainless finish, which accounts for the overwhelming popularity. Many do not want to spend more down the road for re-blues or learn how to do it these days.

I bought a blued one because "it just seemed right" for a service revolver. If it ever needs to be refinished, I'll probably do something silly like have it color-case hardened.

I've owned a couple GP 100's in the past. They were good solid revolvers. I let them go in trades (I am always chasing S&W and Colts), but it wasn't because I was unhappy with them. They just don't hold my interests like the old timers.

Now it would be a real shame if the SP101 went away. That's a good revolver.

I'll PM you with the address of my PayPal account :)

The stainless GP-100's are still easily obtainable, and the blued ones show up several times a year. The GP-100 is still a steady seller for Ruger, and it would be really poor business sense to discontinue the model.

(And Ruger, unlike most gun companies, doesn't lack for business sense.)

The GP is far from gone.
Ruger's updated in the past few months with a MIM trigger & decided to stick with the cast hammer after some experimentation.
The GP line is still very active.

:mad:Ruger GP 3inch(BLUED) is gone, they no longer make. I went to order one and I was told no longer made.

I ordered a GP100 stainless 4" four weeks ago. Gander Mountain said I would get it in about two weeks. I was there the other day, now it might not be delivered until early June. BTW, I ordered it before the order freeze.

The wait will be worth it.

There's a 4" stainless GP100 at my LGS. I'm going to buy it because I heard a rumor they aren't making anymore ;).

Seriously though, I'm finally going to buy the 'if you could only pick one handgun' gun. Looks like it's very well made, good trigger, miniscule barrel/cylinder gap, everything seems to line up like it should.

It's not cheap at $599, maybe I can get that down a bit, but prices are going nowhere but up between now and the first Tuesday in November.

Apparently, Ruger isn't accepting new orders for guns until they catch up on the huge amount of back-orders they have.

So it might be difficult to find certain models for a while.

Hammerhead, I just ordered one from Bud's a few hours ago. It came out to $569.00 shipped and then I obviously have the FFL transfer fee when it arrives. After the sales tax at your LGS you would save a bit going the Bud's route.
