Ruger GP-100 vs. Taurus 627 Tracker

First let me appologize that this have probably been rehashed a million times.

My sole purpose of purchasing a revolver is to reteach myself how to shoot properly. I've, in the past, owned a couple autoloaders and I felt that my shooting techniques were horrible with them. Because of financial reasons, I sold off all my handguns (kept my wwii rifles). I decided that I needed to train myself in trigger control as I felt that was my worst area of shooting. I was always pulling my shots to the left and at times dipping the barrel in anticipation of recoil.

I figured that I needed a DA revolver to help me overcome my poor trigger control issues.

I'm looking at .357 revolvers because of their versatility (as we all know). I could practice with .38 wadcutters and also load up with hotter .357 loads for defense if needed.

I chose the gp100 and 627 because they seemed to fit in my price range better than S&W wheels guns (although I am really lusting for a S&W 696... as rare as they are).

Here's the way I break down the two revolvers:

Ruger GP-100
Ruger reliability
Good price
Never gonna let me down
No barrel porting

Taurus 627 Tracker
7 rounds as opposed to 6
Better looking
Nicer grip

Could you guys compare these two so I can get a better feel for what I could be getting into. If I could find one of those Lipsey's Target Gray models of a Davidson's 5" model, I'd jump on the GP real quick. But since those are so rare, I'm considering the 627.

Thanks.

I have both and would be willing to make you a swinging deal on the Taurus. The Ruger is an all around solid performer that will serve your children well after you are gone. If you just want a stepping stone training piece to get you back to semi autos and the Taurus is much cheaper then go with it as they are usually fairly useable, but they are nowhere near the same league as a GP-100. I'm serious about selling my Tracker, if you want to save a bunch I'd be happy to help. ;)

My GP-100 happens to be the Target Grey model, I just walked into the shop and the fella had two in the case.

Dear Daedalus

I would recommend the Ruger over any Taurus product  I can only tell you that my experience with Ruger and Taurus in the last decade has been thus. I have owned a half dozen Rugers NIB and never had a problem with any of them, any time, period :p

I have also owned six Taurus revolvers NIB and had serious problems with three of them that required sending them back to the facory for repair. My experience was that Customer Service at Taurus was an oxymoron.

Folks say that Taurus is better than it once was. I am unwilling to test the thesis. I just don't buy Taurus any more.

I too recommend the Ruger GP-100, It was designed for unlimited use of even the hottest .357s on the market. The Ruger GP-100 is a working man's gun, built to take decades of hard use without failing. Go ahead and shoot light .38spl loads and work your way up!

I think I'll be getting the GP100 too. I've been looking at a few different s&w's (66, 686 etc), but the small difference in quality and big difference in price is probably going to settle it. Do you guys think the 3" would make a nice ccw? I'm thinking its as close to an all rounder as I'm going to find...

Go Ruger, if you don't like the grip buy a new one. The grips are different for the adjustable VS fixed models. Also check out Ahrends, Hogue, Spegel or Herrets.
