Just received a GP100 from a relative. Anyone have any comments? good? Bad? Revolver looks new, has all the paperwork, shipping container, etc. Blued, .357 magnum

Good? Tough as nails. Short of blowing it up, I doubt you could do anything to hurt it. Excellent basic revolver.

Bad? They're heavy. Not quite as "tuneable" as say a S&W or Colt Python.

I've come to appreciate these more and more. Neither of my 2 SP101s nor my GP100 has as smooth or light a trigger pull as my factory S&Ws. Of course, my 686 was quite a bit more expensive than my GP. They're excellent values for what you pay for them.

I never owned a GP-100 but if it's like the Redhawk or the SP-101, the gun will outlive you. Built like tank and keeps right on going.

You have one of the best revolvers available today. Treat it properly and it will outlast your children. You can shoot any factory ammo to your hearts content with no worry. The trigger can be tuned if you desire by any competent gunsmith, but the trigger out of the box is usually just fine and with use it just gets better. People claim the Smith triggers to be better but there's more bias to it than fact. Shoot it and enjoy it and seriously thank the giver as they must truly care about you.

Bishop,

First, welcome to TFL.

Second, you may wish to search of our revolver forum archives (use "search" above) under GP100. You will find many posts, almost all suggesting the GP100 is an excellent handgun -- I own two -- noted for its accuracy, durability, and reliability. In addition, like all top-quality, mid-size .357 magnum revolvers, it provides unequalled flexibility, accommodating everything from mild .38 Special target rounds to powerful .357 magnum loads for defense and hunting.

Third, thank your relative profusely. Many experts believe the GP100 might be the single choice were any of us compelled to own just one sidearm.

I have one GP100 (3"). I bought it because I feel it may be THE gun for someone who wants just one handgun. I wanted to see how they do relative to others that I have shot. Wanted one that I could use for home defense that I was not worried about whether or not I wiped it off with oil in the last month.

Accuracy. ok (no competition gun, but who would use a 3" for competition anyway?). Performance: Very reliable. Pointability=very good especially if you have average sized hands. Weight=just about right for male or female shooters regardless of what some believe. I once assisted a small framed lady friend to buy a 357 revolver... she chose a 4" Python and she was very happy. I felt good about that.

Much Thanks for all the feedback!! Now to get my hands off my Mil issue .45 and crank a few rounds through the .357. Yes, I do have a .45 from my Marine Corps days, and don't ask how I ended up with it!

I shot my 6 inch GP-100, my uncle's Llama MiniMax .45 (yes, I know), and my father's Browing Buckmark last weekend.

I want a .45 now becauce I had so much fun, but I would NEVER give up my GP-100. It has ample boom, little recoil and is scary accurate. The other guys were angry at me because my gun shot up all the targets before their second chance.

You have two great guns. I think you will be very happy.

I have a relatively new 3", and I agree with all the good things said about it. Best, and maybe the last .357 I will own. A keeper... :D

I absolutely LOVE my GP-100.

I mainly shoot 38sp wadcutters and Winchesters 38sp +P JHP out of mine.

This gun is super accurate.

One of the best deals out there.

Of course I didn't get as good a deal as you :D
