Ruger GP 100 3" vs S&W 60 3" ? (Both 357)

Nice Forum !!. New member here. I am thinking about one of those two for carry. Any members have experience with both revolvers ? How do they compare ?.

Thank you !!

Depends on how much .357 Mag you will really shoot

If you'll be shooting a lot of .357 mag out of these guns, then I'd go with the Ruger. I'm partial to S&W's, but the Ruger will probably hold up better under a steady load of .357 mag. They're both great guns, though.

Both are nice, but you are comparing apples to oranges. A better comparison would be between the M60 S&W and the SP101, or the GP-100 and the S&W 686. What are you looking for: A six round, substantial revolver, or a smallish 5 round?

For carry, I prefer the M60 snubbie; for lots of shooting, the SP101.

Better yet, get both (I did). Actually, I owned all four at one time...

I like my GP-100, but I can't really see lugging its bulk and weight around for the firepower it offers. Personally, I'd look at some of the alloy-framed S&W offerings if I wanted to carry a wheelgun on a regular basis.

Thanks for all the Info !!.
It sounds like the S&W will be easier to conceal/carry and the Ruger will be more durable.

Holly smokes those 3" GP-100 are HUGE. I am 6'1" 225 lbs and will not know how to conceal that Revolver !!.
I guess I have to do more Homework.
Problem - small enough to conceal, big enough grip for my BIG hand.

3 inch 357's

I have a 3 inch GP 100 that is a fine handgun, one of my very favorites. It shoots right to the fixed sights with the load I use the most. Love the grips on it. I also have a S&W Model 66 with the 2 3/4 inch barrel. Nice little handgun also. Has adjustble sights, but the grips were terrible. Had to change them to some Uncle Mikes to be comfortable. I like the sights on the 66 better but once sighted in I don't change them. Both are good guns but the S&W cost quite a bit more and I shoot the Ruger a lot more. You won't go wrong with either one of them. :D

You really ought to consider an SP101.

Re:

I have a 4 inch GP100 SS and love it...but way too big for carry IMO..

I don't have any experience with Ruger double action revolvers. Mrs. Runner has a S&W M60 and a M66. She does not enjoy shooting the M60 (much prefers the trigger on the M66). I'm wondering if she would find the SP101 preferable to the M60? The M66 (3.2" barrel) is a pleasant shooter but way too big for her to carry.

The grip frames on the Smiths are "outboard": the metal outline is nearly the same as the grip's. The Ruger has an "inboard" grip frame: a slender central peg. The Ruger’s inboard frame allows for a great deal of range for custom or customized grips that the S&W will deny. If you have small hands, that may be significant. The ergonomics of the grip are crucial to any shooting, but probably nowhere so important as in a carry gun intended to be brought to bear under stress. Life or death in the next few seconds is no time to be considering how to grab that doesn’t-quite-fit handle.

The 60 has a heavy but smooth action while the SP101 has a heavy action with a little stacking. I had an action job done on the 60 and it's really a sweet shooter now. I haven't worked on th SP101 yet but i have a set of Wolf springs on the way so i'll see how things work out. Either way the SP101 would make a fine ccw, especially with Hogue grips.

I do not like the GP-100. I love the older Security Six in Stainless.
The GP-100 was suppose ro be easier to manufacturer and stronger than most any S&W revolver ["N" frames excluded].
The S&W model 66 is a stainless model 19, which was ment to be a Police Carry Gun. Not a continuous shooter.
Which gun you choose will depend on IF YOU ARE A SHOOTER or a CARRIER. It would be nice to have both...
