Ruger Deerfield Carbine .44mag autoloader, your opinions?

What do you folks think of the Ruger Deerfield Carbine .44 mag autoloader?

I'm interested in a general-use plinker/newbie-trainer/kick-around-in-the- dirt/backcountry/throw-in-the-truckbed kind of rifle that can double up as a "defensive" weapon (I know it's 4-shot with no bolt hold-open device; keyword is "defensive"; I don't plan on engaging infantry battalions with this rifle or putting it in a gym bag;).

What is the recoil and blast like? Fit and finish?

I haven't shot one, but have handled it. Nice little rifle that suffers from really pitiful factory iron sights. If you plan to scope it, go ahead. If not, I'd pass until somebody offeres some good aftermarket sights for it.

Have only seen a photo of one, appeared to be a modification/adaptation of the mini-14. Probably a fun plinker and 100 yd hunting rifle. Main downside in my view is the gas port. All my 44 mag loads are cast lead, lead bullets can clog the gas port stop your rifle. If you use jacketed bullets it may be a lot of fun.

Well, if good 10rnd mags became available...
There could be some potential there.

Someone mentioned Coopers' "Thumper".

10 round mags?

I've been kicking around the idea of making some 10 round mags for these rifles. I would take the standard ruger mags, rip the guts out, take one of those USA aftermarket mags from CTD for about $15 and cut the feed lips off and epoxy glue it to the ruger mag, using the ruger mag feed lips. It would cost tice as much as a factory mag but you'd get better than twice the original capacity. Does this idea sound doable?
