Ruger "Convertable" SA

I'm thinking about getting the Ruger SA New Model Blackhawk Convertible; with two cylinders(9mm and .357 Magnum -- so, .38 Special, too), this covers THREE calibers; as I already have a .38 and a 9mm, this looks really good to me! Anyone here have experience with this SA Ruger? The only SA centerfire I have fired is a Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk .44 Mag and I LOVED it, but don't hunt, so the "Convertable" would fit me better....for now!

Thanks!

I don't own the gun in question but it sounds good to me. I LOVE .357mag, versatile chambering (you can shoot .38s to save money and/or wear and tear and you can shoot magnums too- I LOVE shooting .357mag). The 9mm cylinder sounds good too. 9mm is cheaper to buy than .38 so you can get in some really cheap practice (plus you can load it with defensive 9mm rounds if you wanted to and not have to worry). The common ammo with your two existing guns is convenient plus it would allow you to shoot .357mag. Go for it.

Picked one up over at auctionarms.com this past summer. Neither cylinder is caliber marked which I found a bit strange. My other convertibles, Ruger Single Six & Ubertti Regulator, have at least one barrel caliber marked. I shoot 158gr LRN out of the .357 cylinder. Very accurate. Since you already have a .44 Magnum you should feel comfortable with the .357. 9mm isn't as accurate but so far I've only tried 115 gr Wolf and UMC. The Wolf groupings weren't bad but the steel cases make ejection of rounds troublesome. The UMC are all over the place. I just picked up some 124gr 9mm & will try those the next time I take it out.

A friend of mine has one in 9mm/.357 and I really like it. It functions flawlessly and is very accurate. Thought about getting one myself.

9mm/.357 conv.

Just keep using brass or brass-washed ammo for 9mm and hatever you like for .357mag. and you're likely to be as pleased as I am. I've heard squaks that the 9mm can't be acurate but, hey, those close clean cut holes in the target don't lie.

I've been thinking about the same thing. I used to have an Argentine Browning Hi-Power that, well, sucked...and I still have a 30-rd mag laying around for it :). That's five complete reloads in 9mm on that one stick :D.

(No, it ain't very "Cowboy" to thumb rounds into the loading gate from a semi-auto magazine, but it works REAL well. Just don't try it at a SASS match :D.)

Thanks for the feedback! It fills my desire for a SA and I already like Rugers...I don't plan to become a Cowboy, so the SASS doesn't really figure into it...this just sounds like a very fun gun!
Now, if I had the 30 round stick for quick reloads:eek:

Ron,

Do you find the jacketed 9mm ammo more accurate than lead?

I recently picked up a 9mm cylinder for my Blackhawk, but have only been out once.

I fired a few cylinders of .357 first, and then tried some 9mm 115gr lead reloads, and they seemed to group as well.

It was so darn cold that my teeth were chattering, so it was not a valid comparison. :D

My Blackhwak convertable is extremmly accurate in all three calibers 9MM/ 38Special/ 357Mag.
I really like the 4&5/8" Barrel too.

Here it is.

I'm going to bump this up.
I've got a 6 1/2" Stainless Blackhawk in .357 and was thinking about getting the convertible in 6 1/2" as a match in length.
Now I'm wondering if the 9mm cylinder would be more or less accurate in the shorter 4 5/8" barrel?

Sam,

Barrel length has very little to do with accuracy, but may effect your ability to aim because of a shorter sight radius.

My 9mm cylinder is not as accurate in my revolver, but will still shoot a respectable group.

My two best five shot groups at fifty feet were .348" for .357 HBWC loads, and 1" for 9mm. This is with a 6.5" barrel, and Leupold 2X handgun scope.

Lead bullets some times keyhole, but jacketed bullets do not, and give me much better groups.

Thanks Bill,
I remember reading somewhere that the 9mm bullet has to travel a little further in the convertible cylinder before it entered the barrel, and that may account for less accuracy.
So the extra 2" in the barrel wouldn't correct whatever happened.

My Ruger Blackhawk Convertable shoots .357 ammo accurately. I have found that heavy (147 gr) lead bullets are the most accurate 9mm. Dunno why.

I also own the gun in question. I like mine quite a bit. It is much more accurate than I am. Mine has the 6 and 1/2 inch barrel.I considered the 45 ACP/45 Colt but I went for the 3 caliber ammo availability. Scott

I, too, have the 45Colt/45ACP in 4 5/8" and as Quantrill and dairycreek have said, mine is accurate, fun, and versatile. Although not my ccw, still one of my favorites.
