Ruger Carbine: PC4GR or the new .44?

I'm tempted to buy a Ruger carbine but can't decide whether to get a PC4GR or the new Ruger Deerfield .44. The purpose would be to supplement a home defense arsenal which now includes a Remington 870 and a Ruger KGP 141. Please advise.

I'd stay away from the 44 magnum one. The reasons are magazine capacity, penetration, rapid magazine changes, muzzle blast, and penetration. None of these favor the 44 magnum gun. The PC4 with Ghost Ring Sights is just built for the task of home defense. The 44 is built for hunting. Neither will do the other's job good enough in my opinion. (I also own a P-94 in 40 S&W so that prejudices me a bit)

You should be able to use 180-grain HP's in your .44, leaving you with a low-pen round that is consirably more powerful than .40 S&W. Mag cap limited, though.

I am also interested in the defense application possibilities of the Deerfield carbine. Would it make a good scout or truck rifle? How accurate are they? Any advantage over a Trapper in 44mag?

After I handled one and TRIED to remove and reinstall the magazine. It's about twice as hard as the 10/22. Definitely not a good magazine design. It's mushy feel and difficult installation make for a very difficult course of action.

I shot the PC4 recently and was not super impressed with it. Reliable and fun to plink but accuracy is only so so. Also the PC4 does weight 6.5 lb and very close to the mini-14 in size and weight. I do not see any advantage for a carbine in a home defense situation due to the bulk. A handgun in 40? The PC4 does give you better range outdoors. But since it hold the same capacity as a handgun, I go with a pistol. Actually, didn't the recent test show that .223 are better for close quarters because the energy tend to dissipate very quickly and will not overpenetrate as common handgun calibers like 9mm, 40 & 45? Mini-14 is a better choice.
