Ruger Blackhawk rear sight issues

I brought my New Ruger Blackhawk to the range Friday for a test run.

The pistol shoots as expected 1/2 to 1 in groups at 10 yards. However, and there is always an however.

The rear sight does not respond to elevation changes, either up or down. The point of impact does not change. The bullets always go into the same hole.

This is wonderful, except that I am aiming at 6:00 on the bottom ring and the POI is at 1:00 at the top outer ring (the same ring). About 3 inches.

Does anyone have any suggestions short of contacting Ruger. I would prefer to fix this myself if it can be done.

Many thanks.

Roy

P.S.: I haven't checked the sight except looking at it and looking for debris under the sight.

Does the rear sight visibly move with the adjustment screw that's on the top of the sight body?
It should be easy to see, if it does.

Rear sights are an easy fix on Rugers. Hold the assembly in place with yore thumb and drive out the retaining pin with a small punch. The sight should come off when you release pressure. If not, try to unscrew the elevation screw, being very careful not to loose the small springs underneath the sight tang. These springs may be the source of your trouble, bent and kinked under the tang.

Yes, it does. BTW, I think I solved the problem, I think.

The user manual says 1 click is approx. 3/4in at 25 yards. I was shooting at 10yards and only 3 clicks up or down. Still I showed little movement at the target.

After thinking about it a bit, I think I will try 6, then 2 more & 2 more down clicks until I have a center bull POI with the sights at same. I want the bullet POI and POA the same.

I'm used to adjusting for 600 and 1000 yards with my target rifles. Different.

Thanks,

Roy

Thanks Bob. I saw your post after I answered G. W.'s post. Problem may be solved. I'll post target results next week after I return from the range.

Sounds like your sight DOES respond to elevation changes & does move.
You're just not using enough adjustment.

Keep clicking till your POI goes where you want it.
That's how those work.

Thanks Denis, that's what I'm finding out. However, it must wait until I get back to the range, hopefully next Friday.

I possibly have will have to go out of town next Friday, but that may change. If it does I'll have an answer then.

Allow me to recommend that you sight in at 25 yards. Even further if you can manage it but 50 yards is a long way off for a revolver. If you practice shooting offhand a lot at distances that are a little further than you expect you'll need to, then anything closer becomes easier. 10 yards is very close; even 15 yards is a gimme shot for my short barreled Vaquero. 25 yards is substantially more challenging. BTW, congratulations on the Blackhawk purchase. What's your barrel length?

I never like those Micro sights so.....

I put Bowen Rough Country on them. Best I've every used and worth every penny.

I was going to mention your not going to notice much shooting that close, but you have that covered now.

As for how far is far enough, I usually will start at 25yds rested, and work out to 75-100, depending on the caliber. For the 45 ACP 50 is plenty far, as it is for the 38 SPL. Everything else however goes to at least 75yds.

If you do some shooting at these distances, working into them of course, you will find that with a decent rest one can shoot some incredibly good groups with most revolvers. Like anything else however it takes practice. Once you know things are good from the rest then you start using offhand holds in field positions and then adding in either a mono pod or by-pod if your planning on hunting with them.

I have been hunting with mine for over 25yrs in calibers from .357 up through 454, and it is a ball.

Good luck with yours, I's working on some cast loads to shoot in my 30 Carbine BH. Hopefully they will shoot as well as my other cast loads have.

Sorry about the very late reply. Everything just got out of hand.

I have solved my sight problem. I was not moving the sight enough. About 6 clicks for 1/2 in at a time at 25 yards did it.
